A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Building trust is key. A tutor should also help the student develop independent learning strategies, so they feel empowered to tackle challenges on their own over time. It's not just about…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

It is most important to provide a comfortable space for students to make errors and learn, while also providing the motivation and space for studying to be completed. I focus on relatability but have also completed my QCE with relatively good grades and understand high school content. On top of this I have limited energy for tomfoolery, while…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. For the less motivated students, a tutor can help them gain interest in the subject, which I think is the most important thing for a learner. For most of the students, a tutor should be a guide to lead them to pick up knowledge points bit by bit and finally have a general clear map of them. I am quite good at being with people, no matter what…

A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

Supporting the student and building their confidence is very important, as the belief that you are capable and have a strong grasp of the material is essential to success. Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
