The most important thing a tutor should do for a student is to make the concepts clear for a particular topic instead of just mugging up the concept. Also the tutor must be able to solve all queries by patiently listening. I am good at explaining a concept in the most easy way available. Also I first listen to the students problem so that I can…

Its not only good that a tutor should have a good command of his core area of specialty, he/she must also be able to pass the knowledge across in a way the students will comprehend. Ability to come down to the level of my student and create an enabling environment for them to have a…

Successful tutors can build strong, personal relationships with their students. As they can teach to the student's strengths, they are able to minimize the student's weaknesses. Additionally, tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents and teachers I am very communicative. I can attract children's attention and make the lesson much…

Help them look at things from a different view. That is what most students struggle with and once they understand the basics it is much easier to build on that, to lead into the more advanced topics. Getting the point across and making topics easy to understand. That is what I have been told by the people I have tutored. I give examples that…

The most important thing a tutor can do is find the most efficient way to deliver concepts to their students. This will always change for each student, and so a good tutor has to be flexible and receptive to what works and what doesn't. The end goal really is to get them educated, and if that means fostering a strong friendly connection or simply…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Inside Pascoe ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adam completed reading comprehension tasks with multiple choice questions and wrote a creative paragraph about what he would do if he saw a dinosaur in the backyard.

Year 10 student Lucy focused on the roles and responsibilities of judges, accused persons, prosecution, and legal practitioners in the court system, as well as exploring the purposes of criminal sanctions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Harsh worked through key psychology topics including subdivisions of the central and peripheral nervous systems for responding to sensory stimuli and examined how neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA influence neural communication.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student hesitated to start sentences without prompting and often needed help generating ideas for writing, which slowed progress on tasks.

In a Year 7 English lesson, he rushed through multiple-choice questions and relied on teacher approval before circling answers, leading to uncertainty and second-guessing.

Across several year levels, spelling errors recurred—especially when work was completed in haste or without checking.

A Year 10 student took too long on homework, then hurried later tasks "for the sake of completion," resulting in missed corrections and lower-quality responses. This left him feeling unsure about his final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale tutor noticed a Year 10 student recently started tackling practice questions independently without checking her notes, a big step up from earlier sessions when she relied on them for every answer.

In Year 8 English, a student who used to avoid reading aloud now volunteers to read whole pages and even goes back to fix any sentences that sound off—something he was once hesitant about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun spelling unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and trying on his own before asking for help, finishing last week's spelling test with almost no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pascoe Vale Primary School.
