I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be empathetic to the experience of a student, especially as a young person. Having been a recent graduate, I understand the pressures, stress and desires surrounding ones education and the want to improve and evolve as a learner. Therefore, being empathetic allows a tutor to…

Leave them with a proper process with answering questions under time pressure. Make learning if not enjoyable at least tolerable, as learning new things is much harder if you don’t have any interest in it. Make your teaching digestible for the student depending on their level of understanding - not too easy not too hard. Breaking down complex…

The most valuable asset I have as a tutor is my belief that every student can succeed. Each student should come in knowing that there is someone who believes they can achieve more if they have the right motivation. Teachers have a large impact on shaping students mindset, and wellbeing, which I take to heart for all my students. As a pre-service…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is to share your passion with student. The most effective learning occurs when the student is engaged, invested and passionate in the subject you are teaching. Forming a professional, friendly relationship with the student is key in achieving this. Although improvements in a certain topic of maths…

An ability to communicate a genuine passion for the subject. Patience and being calm in the delivery of the content. The first thing is to make students not feeling too resistant to math. You need to be interested in a subject in order to achieve a good result. Also, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable and relax, and be confident to do math questions and ask questions. My strength is to use the simplest way to explain math questions. I had always…

Student's improvement. I would like to raise the student's attitude toward the subject by , for example, giving them the applications and examples of the theories. Role of tutor is not to make a student learn single subject, but understand students' learning rhythm and motivations. If you can't challenge student in learning path, it will benefit him in short run, but in long run he will fail miserably. Learning is the experience of fun and enjoyment. Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. Local Reviews

While it seemed to take a little while to pair with a tutor, the match was perfect. I couldn't be happier with the service. Definitely worth the conversation if you have a child with a specific need. We are already seeing improvements after only a few sessions.
Imelda Patton, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe Vale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tania reviewed the rules for indices and surds, practiced operations with both, and worked through questions involving addition, subtraction, and rationalising denominators.

Year 10 student Lucas focused on quadratic equations by factorising both monic and non-monic trinomials as well as solving quadratics using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled trigonometry applications including bearings and word problems requiring angles of elevation and depression.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's handwriting and arrangement of working out led to confusion during calculation—in factorisation tasks, this meant both the tutor and student lost time trying to decipher steps.

A Year 8 learner arrived unprepared, having forgotten textbooks and lacking familiarity with digital tools, which limited engagement in the session.

For a Year 10 algebra class, "just reading notes and doing practice questions" without tackling unfamiliar problems slowed progress on the unit circle topic.

In VCE Chemistry, skipping careful checks after calculations led to unnoticed errors; as a tutor observed: "methodical calculations were needed but not always followed through."

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale South tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who had struggled with factorisation; this time, he was able to construct several examples independently and tackle key homework steps that were previously out of reach.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student began deriving equations correctly for the first time—something she'd hesitated over before—and even worked through problems involving limits and derivatives with much less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to quietly muddle through reading now reads fluently and enunciates well, only occasionally needing encouragement to project his voice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Antonine College.
