Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. Leading students patiently through the learning process helps instil confidence. I've received multiple feedback from…

Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the proper tools and techniques to achieve their goals so that eventually they don't need to rely on you to succeed. A tutor should also be patient and provide a thorough explanation for every task, whilst being completely non-judgemental of the student and their…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to get to know them well, so they can understand where the student is at in terms of their learning, and what way they learn best. This can allow me as a tutor to effectively use my skills and knowledge in the best way to help each individual student get the most out of their…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. Everyone is different and has different things that matter to them. Learning more about…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

Apart from many things, confidence to then be able to take back into the classroom, and real world. Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

Ezy math tutoring is a great program that my daughter loves being a part of.
Stephen, Reservoir

Inside ReservoirTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 Olivia practised addition and subtraction with large numbers and explored perimeter of shapes, also tackling times tables using games.

Year 8 James revised circle properties in preparation for a test, and worked on algebra problems involving fractions.

For Year 10 Elizabeth, the lesson focused on linear equations—including solving simultaneous equations—and interpreting solutions such as one, none, or infinitely many using example problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, planning and organizing written tasks remained a challenge—"Jordan would benefit by planning his writing tasks using the following steps: close reading, brainstorming, and checking grammar," noted one tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student in maths often avoided writing down full workings for algebraic problems; as observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In senior maths, another student grew reliant on calculators even for simple multiplications (e.g., 3Ă—2), slowing their fluency.

During a Year 7 test review, lack of focus led to missed question details and unnecessary confusion over parallel lines with transversals.

Recent Achievements

One Reservoir tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student's approach to polynomial equations—she initially hesitated with the rational root theorem, but after breaking it down together, she started explaining each step back and solved difference of cubes problems on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who previously struggled with grouping like terms became noticeably faster and more accurate using brackets correctly when expanding algebraic expressions, showing improved speed and accuracy.

In a younger session, one Year 4 student moved from quietly guessing at answers to confidently asking for clarification whenever she was unsure, finishing her multiplication tables independently by the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Reservoir Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gabriel's School.
