Some of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student are to boost their self-esteem, adjust to their preferred method of learning, and simplify difficult ideas. In addition to encouraging critical thinking and offering concise explanations, a tutor should foster a safe space where students feel free to make mistakes and ask questions. My…

Understanding and discipline. Everyone have their own unique circumstances and so being understanding about it is extremely important for any tutor. But balancing it out with disciplinary and rigorous prepping goes a long way to boost a student's study. My communication skills are what defined my teaching. To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

I believe a tutor should have a better understanding of student's perspectives. To elaborate, every student has a different perspective, and some will go in a very different direction tutor should understand the student's perspective before judging or correcting students. The tutor should ask questions and should bring up real-life examples so…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. Local Reviews

Ezy math tutoring is a great program that my daughter loves being a part of.
Stephen, Reservoir

Inside ReservoirTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 Olivia practised addition and subtraction with large numbers and explored perimeter of shapes, also tackling times tables using games.

Year 8 James revised circle properties in preparation for a test, and worked on algebra problems involving fractions.

For Year 10 Elizabeth, the lesson focused on linear equations—including solving simultaneous equations—and interpreting solutions such as one, none, or infinitely many using example problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, planning and organizing written tasks remained a challenge—"Jordan would benefit by planning his writing tasks using the following steps: close reading, brainstorming, and checking grammar," noted one tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student in maths often avoided writing down full workings for algebraic problems; as observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In senior maths, another student grew reliant on calculators even for simple multiplications (e.g., 3×2), slowing their fluency.

During a Year 7 test review, lack of focus led to missed question details and unnecessary confusion over parallel lines with transversals.

Recent Achievements

One Reservoir tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student's approach to polynomial equations—she initially hesitated with the rational root theorem, but after breaking it down together, she started explaining each step back and solved difference of cubes problems on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who previously struggled with grouping like terms became noticeably faster and more accurate using brackets correctly when expanding algebraic expressions, showing improved speed and accuracy.

In a younger session, one Year 4 student moved from quietly guessing at answers to confidently asking for clarification whenever she was unsure, finishing her multiplication tables independently by the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Reservoir Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gabriel's School.
