The most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a personal learning experience understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I believe it is important to provide a human connection, and be consistent such that these young learners believe their tutors really want the best for them. I'm very dedicated and would ensure…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

The confidence to attempt and solve increasingly complex problems independently. The ability of a tutor to impart an understanding of the foundations is the most important thing a tutor can do. Ability to breakdown more complex problems into manageable sections thus enabling the student to apply and practice the solving process rather then…

Being a medical student, I value how education builds an individual. Having the right mentors and teachers during one's educational journey can either make or break them. Students look up to their mentors and tutors for various reasons. Students already interact with teachers at school, so they require a friend who understands their problems and…

I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

As a tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths in truly…

Be patient, sometime students are having a hard time to understand some new confusing concepts in math or physics. It is important to explain the concept to students in a different way. A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to assess their interest, strong and weak points and guide them to help them decide what field/specialization they want to seem themselves in. The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. We have absolutely loved having Val as our tutor and we have seen improvement in our daughter school work as a result of our sessions.
Kylie, Richmond

Inside RichmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice explored trigonometry concepts and practised solving linear equations, working through diagrams to visualise problems.

In Year 10, Ethan focused on exam revision by tackling questions on compound interest and financial maths calculations, building confidence with past test examples.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Chloe strengthened her understanding of equivalent fractions and learned to convert between fractions and decimals using step-by-step practice activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 maths, one student's notes reveal that unclear assignment instructions and messy written work made it difficult to track what needed to be done; "Sheets and books were quite messy/disorganized—fixing this may help her keep track of instructions and tasks."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with extracting information from graphs and tables during probability work, which slowed progress on worded questions.

In Year 7, motivation flagged during new topics, leading to slow starts and forgotten connections between lessons.

For several students across Years 8–10, practice was limited mostly to familiar question types rather than tackling more challenging or unfamiliar problems.

Recent Achievements

One Richmond tutor noticed a big shift in Tia's approach to trigonometry—after struggling with labelling triangle sides in earlier tests, she now identifies hypotenuse, opposite, and adjacent correctly without help, even catching her own mistakes mid-problem.

In another session, Molly brought questions she'd found tough in class and, after some prompting, worked through multi-step worded problems independently—something she hesitated to try on her own before.

Meanwhile, Natalia showed new self-reliance by spotting when she'd missed parts of a maths question and correcting herself before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of West Torrens Public Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sports College South Australia - West Adelaide Football Club.
