I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student enjoy what he/she is studying. When the student has gained the interest and really enjoy the process of learning; I believe they will definitely perform better. I believe that one of my strongest strengths is that I am very patient with students. This is because I have…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Be a person who they can come to when they need help. As we spend a big chunk of time together our student teacher relationship becomes stronger showing them to talk to their problems whether it may be social or academic. My communication because I lived in a boarding school for 5 years I was able to learn to effectively communicate with…

By far the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they have a strong base knowledge of the subject by explaining and approaching ideas in ways that they understand and can use practically. My knowledge of the subject matter (maths and physics) is excellent and I\'ve seen and used a number of different teaching methods in my…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. This kind of motivation and encouragement can then build into other parts of the student's life thus…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to kindle in them a curiosity for the world around them and to guide them in looking for answers. I do not believe in the teach-to-test approach. Instead, I believe that teaching should not be compared to filling a bottle with water but rather to helping a flower grow in its own way. As…

In my opinion, the most important things that a tutor can do are: - encourage students to explain concepts in their own words - be patient and enthusiastic with them - give them plenty of relevant questions to help reinforce concepts - listen to them explain how they learn best and adapt one's teaching style accordingly - be flexible in case…

It is important for a tutor to be a good listener and finding the best route to achieve the best result. Based on individuals, we need to understand their real struggle and making plan accordingly. Also being empathic to their problems, and encouraging. I'm patient and an active problem solver. I would seek different ways to help our student…

I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

Being adaptable and patient are the things I find to be the most important. A tutor can guide and motivate his/her students to achieve their intended goals and help them to create a pathway for their future. With experience and knowledge, a tutor can become the driving force to help the students succeed in their lives. A tutor should have the ability to catch hold the weaknesses of a student, and then they should further…

Priority is to solve their problems. HOWEVER, the most important thing is to intrigue them with knowledge. I'm totally the opposite of boring. I smile a lot. I've…

A tutor should be able to inspire a student. By giving knowledge, a tutor should not just make a student achieve a higher grade. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is building their confidence. I believe in rewarding students for their hard work - wether if its a small chocolate bar, or even just a compliment. As small as it may sound, this can be essential for the students' confidence, which will naturally encourage them to achieve better results. It…

Well-prepared lesson plan before tuition would be my priority and i would try my best to engage students in my lesson. A tutor should be able to make the student understand more about what they're studying and not just being able to work on the exercise but also understanding the whole concept because if we know the concept well then formulas come easily. Chris, Elsternwick

Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
