A tutor can tailor instruction to meet the specific needs, learning style, and pace of the student. Moreover, students can help students understand complex concepts by providing clear explanations, examples, and demonstrations. Additionally, a tutor can assess the student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject and use this assessment to create…

I believe the most powerful way a tutor can aid a student is by giving them confidence. More than often, students can show more vulnerability in a one-on-one session than in a classroom surrounded by their peers, and so the best thing I can do is use these private sessions to impart confidence in the students by making them see ways they can…

I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

Expanding on what I have written earlier, I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be prepared, and always willing to learn. I think this requires being a bit humble, and accepting that, even with something that may appear to be far below the tutor's learning, there may still be things that aren't known or have…

I believe the most important aspect is encouraging learning and allowing students to explore creative aspects of learning freely. I believe that the way you are taught and the encouragement you receive along the way has a significant impact on a student's performance. Hence, I believe that teaching a student to be confident in themselves and their…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I spent most of my adult life abroad as a…

A tutor should be able to communicate clearly with a student. It is important for a tutor to be patient with a student as different students learn at different paces. A tutor should be able understand the learning style of a student and have the ability to explain a concept in multiple ways to ensure that the student is confident with a concept.…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is to foster a supportive and positive learning environment. This is because it is important to create a safe and encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and improvements. It is also important for the tutor to tailor the teaching approach to each individual…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to accommodate their learning style. Students have ranging techniques and motivations when learning content. Personally, I struggled with auditory learning as a student, and would therefore ask my teachers to give me a range of tactile learning techniques to assist in my learning. I…

I think the most important things as a tutor are designing a personal learning plan for each student; patient to everyone who has difficulties in learning; willing to share my own experience to help them to build self-confidence; treating students as individuals and helping each to achieve their full potential. Primarily, a tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. Tutor can be a mentor not only of the academic but can be a mentor of other emotional and mental problems. Patience is the baby step to become an effective tutor. I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

1. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them become more confident with themselves about their ability to achieve the grade they want in the subject they want. I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. Something that sets me apart from many other tutors is that I’m very relatable, something which I think is very important to a student. Maria, Royston Park

Inside Royston ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 2 student Naba worked on identifying and using the greater than, less than, and equals signs to compare numbers, as well as reading, writing, and using essential sight words like 'find', 'four', and 'for' in sentences.

Year 6 student Maim practised long division with three-digit numbers (including those with remainders) and improved her persuasive writing skills through a prompt arguing against homework.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Sarah focused on algebraic expressions—creating them from worded problems—and began learning how to square numbers in preparation for more advanced algebra.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, confusion often arose when translating word problems into algebraic expressions; as one tutor observed, "he gets tangled in his thoughts when the answer is there, but gets lost in the process." This meant repeated prompts were needed to clarify what each question required, especially with addition versus multiplication.

For a Year 4 student, misunderstanding instructions in both maths and English led to avoidable errors—she only improved after reading questions aloud together.

In early primary, messy handwriting and reversed numbers made written work hard to interpret; copying sentences sometimes resulted in missing words or letters, which slowed progress.

Recent Achievements

One Royston Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 8 student's approach to fractions—after consistently getting homework problems wrong, he was able to tackle them successfully in-session and began talking through his steps out loud instead of guessing quietly.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on long division now solves multi-digit sums with barely any prompting and even identified her own mistakes without waiting for help.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to form sentences independently is now using word prompts to create imaginative descriptions, only asking for guidance when truly needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marden Senior College.
