One of the most important things a tutor can do is to create a safe learning environment that strives to nurture the student's ability to think critically and to approach questions in a systematic manner. Applying Socratic questioning techniques is one way to do so. The power relationship between the student and teacher must be balanced so that…

Not only academic but also personal growth is what I consider most important. While academic improvement is a key focus and often a priority for students and their parents, I believe fostering curiosity and building confidence should be integral to the teaching process. Tutors and teachers play a vital role in nurturing students, helping them grow…

Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial. Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. Lastly, finding alternative strategies for solving problems is very important if the student is stuck on a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is always listen to what the student needs and try to expand upon their techniques that they use in their subjects. This allows the student to manipulate different techniques in their subjects for different topics, whether it may be working on Maths questions or planning how to write…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. Being open minded and starting somewhere is such an effective way to move forward and…

Help them to feel more confident and comfortable with the subject. It is most important for the student to reach a level of independent confidence with relying on the tutor or other forms of help. I am confident that an ability to find a right way to deliver an imformation is the best thing a true tutor can do. Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. One of the most significant roles I believe a tutor can play for a student is to inspire a vision for a brighter future and a better life. A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to motivate the student and provide constant encouragement when the student is feeling demotivated. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

Being empathetic and understanding is one of the most important qualities a tutor can have. Inside SalisburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily practised adding and subtracting fractions, then moved on to working with decimals by using number lines for clarity.

In Year 9, Alex focused on algebraic equations and interpreting patterns in sequences through hands-on examples.

For Year 11, Layla tackled combinations and probability questions she'd prepared ahead of time, followed by some challenging proof questions to deepen her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often avoided showing working in algebra, making it hard to spot where understanding slipped—"he seemed to know what to do but didn't want to try," as one tutor noted.

In Year 10, incomplete revision meant only the easier familiar material was practiced; tougher trigonometry questions left him stuck without a strategy.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student struggled with fractions but would lose focus and need extra guidance just to start each problem.

In senior maths, forgetting required materials or mixing up formula sheets led to time lost hunting for basics instead of solving equations.

Recent Achievements

A Salisbury tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to hesitate on algebra—now, he attempts questions without prompts and even checks his own working.

In another high school session, one student who struggled to recall how to solve simultaneous equations last term was able to complete all the steps independently this week, showing clear progress in both understanding and initiative.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has started asking for help instead of guessing when stuck on fractions, leading her to finish her worksheet with only two minor errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Coopers Plains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The BUSY School - Salisbury Campus.
