I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. When students feel safe to learn this way, they become more engaged, motivated, and able to reach their potential. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to explain concepts clearly…

Having that listening ear for your student is important as every child is different. As such, it is important to know and acknowledge that each student will have a different skill set and thus succeed in different approaches. That listening ear will be helpful and important as this will give the student opportunities to explain themselves more…

To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. Lastly, a tutor should practice patience,…

Besides knowledge and communication skills. 1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

Tutors should be able to build independence and confidence in the student, allowing them to improve their problem solving skills and gain new approaches or strategies to learning. The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to inspire students through education. I believe tutor should share their experience with their students. As someone who has walked in their shoes, tutors should be able to share new knowledges and experiences, something that a teacher wouldn’t be able to sympathise with. Therefore, besides teaching them facts about a specific topics, tutors should go above and beyond, providing…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

Inside ScoresbyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Esther worked on reading aloud from the Fitzroy Reader series, focusing on pronunciation and understanding of new vocabulary like "light" and "melody" using fill-in-the-blank exercises.

In Year 10, Jake tackled operations with matrices, including advanced problems involving communication and dominance matrices to deepen his understanding for SAC preparation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Olivia focused on VCE Maths Methods exam revision by practising extended response questions in probability, as well as reviewing multistage experiments and conditional probability scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 2 English, a student avoided reading aloud when longer words appeared; "she jumped to the first and last letter of 'mandarin' instead of sounding out each part." This made it hard to build confidence with unfamiliar texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's maths progress was slowed by incomplete homework on polynomial functions—assigned tasks weren't brought in for feedback, so misconceptions lingered.

In VCE Maths Methods, another student repeatedly left school assignment problems unfinished, meaning key skills (like exam-style extended responses) remained shaky before tests.

Each instance led to lost chances for targeted support or skill consolidation at crucial moments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Scoresby recently noticed a big change in Joanne (Year 7): after struggling to keep track of her maths notes, she's now organising them independently and finishing most homework tasks correctly.

In Year 11 maths, Ashley went from hesitating to ask for help with functions to clarifying every doubt out loud during sessions, then tackling even the tougher problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to skip over hard words is now stopping mid-sentence to self-correct pronunciation—she read an entire book this week and handled tricky two-syllable nouns on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rowville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Scoresby Primary School.
