I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. And also make them feel confident in their abilities as well as teaching them a new confidence of autonomy when it comes to…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build strong learning foundations and to motivate student to develop a good learning habits. Depending on the student, tutor is responsible to acknowledge student’s weakness and develop a systemic learning program that allows student to absorb understanding rather than…

Be a non-judgmental voice they can ask about any questions they have on the subject matter and be someone who can effectively listen and explain their own knowledge to the student. I believe my strengths as a tutor are my understanding and practical use of Math thanks to my degree and my ability to listen to what a student is struggling with and…

Inside Seventeen Mile RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Priya focused on factorising polynomials and applying the remainder theorem, as well as interpreting and sketching piecewise functions.

In Year 9, Liam practised solving linear equations and worked with decimal operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strengthen his number skills.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Zoe consolidated her understanding of ratios between numbers and practised dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 with results calculated to two decimal places.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed for a Year 11 Chemistry session, limiting progress on consolidating acid/base concepts.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, the notes highlighted "she tries to draw the graph in her head instead of working it out," which led to confusion with piecewise and polynomial graphs—important steps were skipped on paper.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot formulas during algebra and area questions, partly from only revising recent content instead of older material.

One Year 4 learner didn't remember to add carried numbers in multi-digit addition, causing calculation slip-ups that went unchecked.

Recent Achievements

One Seventeen Mile Rocks tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck rearranging formulas now quickly solves for unknowns and graphs linear equations with only a nudge.

In chemistry, a senior high school student who previously mixed up different acid types is now confidently explaining the steps for polyprotic acids and balancing tricky equations independently.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Tahlia, who struggled to remember her 9x tables, now uses clever tricks she's learned to break them down herself and recently worked through big number multiplication problems like 147 x 48 without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
