A tutor can change a student's life in ways more than one. She can help them find their confidence. She can, also, help them believe in themselves and encourage them to ask questions they have been scared to ask in their classes. A tutor can help a student overcome their fears and help them improve. Apart from helping the students achieve their…

Firstly, I believe the philosophy of "Teaching to fish rather than giving a fish. " It suggests that the tutor has a responsibility to inspire her students to take further exploration in the subject and cultivate good learning habits. Secondly, I think encouragement is essential in tutoring. Being as a tutor, I would let my student know that they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to make them realise that they have much more potential than they think. Tutors have the opportunity to show and help students to gain confidence in themselves and this will remain with them not only during their schooling years, but as they grow and face many challenges in life. Besides imparting essential knowledge of the subject, I think it is very important that the tutor has to show the student a right direction how to study and absorb knowledge, so that in the future they can study independently in college. In addition, a tutor can use various means to motivate the student to study harder and improve themselves day…

Secondly, a good tutor is someone who can offer guidence through problems and assigments, without simply giving them the answer or doing it for them.…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

Inside Seventeen Mile RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Priya focused on factorising polynomials and applying the remainder theorem, as well as interpreting and sketching piecewise functions.

In Year 9, Liam practised solving linear equations and worked with decimal operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strengthen his number skills.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Zoe consolidated her understanding of ratios between numbers and practised dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 with results calculated to two decimal places.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed for a Year 11 Chemistry session, limiting progress on consolidating acid/base concepts.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, the notes highlighted "she tries to draw the graph in her head instead of working it out," which led to confusion with piecewise and polynomial graphs—important steps were skipped on paper.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot formulas during algebra and area questions, partly from only revising recent content instead of older material.

One Year 4 learner didn't remember to add carried numbers in multi-digit addition, causing calculation slip-ups that went unchecked.

Recent Achievements

One Seventeen Mile Rocks tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck rearranging formulas now quickly solves for unknowns and graphs linear equations with only a nudge.

In chemistry, a senior high school student who previously mixed up different acid types is now confidently explaining the steps for polyprotic acids and balancing tricky equations independently.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Tahlia, who struggled to remember her 9x tables, now uses clever tricks she's learned to break them down herself and recently worked through big number multiplication problems like 147 x 48 without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
