Ideally, I want to instill the same sense of wonder and love that I have for mathematics in the students. This won't work for all students, of course, so failing that I think a tutor should be able to teach a student how to think for themselves - it's one thing to be shown how to get an answer, and it's another thing entirely to be taught how to…

Not just tutor them, but be a friend. By opening up and developing a closer bond to students, the students feel more comfortable and it doesn't become a tutoring session, but just a study session. I went through the course(s) myself quite recently, so I understand what's expected on the students, and what they need to do to excel and not only get…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer them quality information and direct feedback on their work and areas of struggle. Additionally, a tutor should be humble such that they do not impose their own ideas onto a student, but rather walk alongside the student's journey of learning. This helps to establish a strong…

While I believe it is obviously important to help a student learn and understand their chosen subject, it is also important to support and encourage confidence in a student. I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. Being open minded and starting somewhere is such an effective way to move forward and…

From my experience, the most important thing/skill as a tutor is to understand what students are not understanding. I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. Tutors should find those in students quickly and resolve it by teaching effectively. One of the biggest…

First and foremost a tutor needs to give them confidence, A tutor should show the students that even the hardest questions can be solved by practicing and hard working. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

So far I have found several factors that make for good tutors. Firstly building a strong and personal relationship with the student is very important as the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor can add essential ingredients for students to learn and grow. Secondly, communication and collaboration with the student,…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. When a tutor embodies passion for learning, students are more likely to have a positive emotional connection to learning. And in this way will inspire their motivation to…

Inside Seventeen Mile RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Priya focused on factorising polynomials and applying the remainder theorem, as well as interpreting and sketching piecewise functions.

In Year 9, Liam practised solving linear equations and worked with decimal operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strengthen his number skills.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Zoe consolidated her understanding of ratios between numbers and practised dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 with results calculated to two decimal places.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed for a Year 11 Chemistry session, limiting progress on consolidating acid/base concepts.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, the notes highlighted "she tries to draw the graph in her head instead of working it out," which led to confusion with piecewise and polynomial graphs—important steps were skipped on paper.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot formulas during algebra and area questions, partly from only revising recent content instead of older material.

One Year 4 learner didn't remember to add carried numbers in multi-digit addition, causing calculation slip-ups that went unchecked.

Recent Achievements

One Seventeen Mile Rocks tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck rearranging formulas now quickly solves for unknowns and graphs linear equations with only a nudge.

In chemistry, a senior high school student who previously mixed up different acid types is now confidently explaining the steps for polyprotic acids and balancing tricky equations independently.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Tahlia, who struggled to remember her 9x tables, now uses clever tricks she's learned to break them down herself and recently worked through big number multiplication problems like 147 x 48 without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
