I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A lot of students already know more than they think they just need someone to believe in them, guide them, and show them how to approach problems step by step. One of my biggest strengths is patience. I never rush a student, rather I give them time to…

For me, helping the student grasp the intuition of the concept at hand is perhaps the most important aspect of tutoring. This is particularly relevant for a subject like mathematics where understanding the theory is just as important as applying it to many different situations. Lack of effective instruction in this regard is unfortunately why…

I believe the most important thing I can do for my students would to be patient with them, taking the necessary time for them to understand the content they need help with. Additionally, rather than directly telling them the methods to do a certain question, I believe a good tutor should rather guide the student to the correct solution, which…

A tutor must help a student reach their greatest potential. A tutor must understand their student's skillful areas and utilize them to the best of their abilities. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to become a close friend, a mentor that the student can fully trust and look up to, while at the same time, a tutor acts alongside with teachers and parents to understand a student's problems (if there is any) and improve student's performance academically. -I am professional: I have…

The most important thing a tutor should do for a student is to make the concepts clear for a particular topic instead of just mugging up the concept. In my opinion, a tutor is not just for supporting a student to complete his assessments and helping them to solve questions. A tutor has an even more close connection with a student than his school teacher. Hence he has a better chance to identify what is the level of a particular student and what support he or she actually needs. Other…

Inside SomertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sohaila revisited the split strategy for three-digit by two-digit multiplication, followed by targeted division problems to reinforce prior learning.

Year 10 student Keshan focused on rearranging equations in coordinate geometry, solving for gradient and y-intercept, and practiced expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using step-by-step examples.

For Year 6, Zoyi worked through an English assessment that included comprehension, spelling, grammar, and paragraph writing skills to address areas of difficulty.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student often struggled to connect evidence to broader themes in text responses; as one tutor observed, "she tended to describe events rather than analyse their impact." This limited the depth of her essays.

In Year 7 mathematics, another student needed reminders to complete assigned homework and showed difficulty managing time during multi-step algebra tasks—unfinished questions meant missed feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner's written work was hard to follow due to inconsistent punctuation and paragraphing, making it challenging for her to proofread effectively. By lesson's end, fatigue sometimes led to skipped steps or incomplete practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Somerton noticed one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to seek clarification, now independently identifies her weak spots in English essays and actively asks for targeted feedback—something she never did before.

In Year 7 maths, a student who once guessed at multiplication strategies is now confidently applying the split strategy to tackle both two-digit by two-digit and three-digit by two-digit problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner recently began solving worded maths questions on her own after initially struggling to decode what each question was really asking, finishing an entire worksheet with just one prompt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh Park Primary School.
