The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to impart knowledge and let them grow. Also, tutors need to be patient when it comes to teaching students. The greatest strength I have as a tutor is patience. I am calm & patient with kids which helps me to build a great rapport with them. Also, as a teacher it's important to listen to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

First, I think a tutor should have good subject and curriculum knowledge so that they may be able to provide as much information as they can towards the kids. I think communication skills is another important thing a tutor must have (the way they explain the topics so that it is easy for the students to understand). Finally a tutor must be patient…

The assistance for gaining problem solving ability allows the student to solve about 50% of the task and remaining 50% comes with practice. This aspect to develop Problem solving skills is essential and most important thing a tutor can do. I can explain any concept given to me in the my domain with the most rudimentary approach. Which allows to…

For me, the two things that aided me most when I was being tutored in highschool were practice questions given to me by tutors and when these tutors took their time to really deconstruct these concepts until I fully understood them. My biggest strength is patience. Sometimes it takes students a long time to begin to understand certain concepts and…

I think the most important thing is to adhere to the students needs and their form of learning. If a student is more of a visual learner then I would adapt my teaching style to suit them. I also feel that being available after class hours for queries and concerns is vital but also be able to provide guidance and a good role model not only…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is creating an environment and relationship where the student understands and feels comfortable knowing that it is okay not to understand something and it is ok to ask for, or need help. Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

Inside South PerthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Riley worked through place value to support multiplication, then practiced short division using worded problems for real-world context.

In Year 8, Hannah focused on mean, median, mode, and range calculations along with large addition and subtraction tasks from the Year 8 syllabus.

For Year 9, Jay tackled trigonometry concepts including SOHCAHTOA as well as working with gradients and y-intercepts by linking tables to graphs during algebraic exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, "written expression" stood out as a recurring challenge—one student's ideas were strong when spoken but "just needed to write it down," especially in creative writing where grammar and holistic articulation held them back.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 Maths lesson revealed over-reliance on familiar problems: notes were used well for standard tasks, but applying them to unfamiliar calculator questions was avoided.

A Year 7 student working on fractions and percentages hesitated to trust their own working and often looked for patterns instead of understanding concepts. This sometimes left mistakes hidden until revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One South Perth tutor recently noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who had struggled to link fractions, decimals, and percentages—after several sessions, she could explain their interconnections on her own and used new strategies without prompting.

In Year 12, John moved from being hesitant about statistics to independently solving mode, median, range, and mean problems; he now asks for clarification rather than leaving answers blank.

Meanwhile, Riley in Year 5 went from guessing short division answers to working through problems fluently with just occasional place value hints. Last week he finished his worksheet without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wesley College.
