Building confidence, fostering curiosity, and fostering a positive learning environment are, in my opinion, the three most crucial things a tutor can do for a student. Tutoring is more than just teaching material; it's also about giving students the confidence to learn and the skills to solve problems on their own. My ability to be patient is one…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do with a student is have patience. I think patience underlines all the critical aspects regarding tutoring. To engage effectively with a student, it has to happen naturally, it can't be forced. It does take a bit of time to understand what kind of teaching style a student will respond well to.…

To help them believe that given time commitment and a good study plan, that they (students) can succeed. Instilling that faith in the student counts for so much in helping the student. I believe striking a balance in how the tutor interacts with a student is key. Being able to listen and identify a student's problem areas, as well as being firm enough to hold their attention is vital. A good tutor can set expectations tailored to a student's abilities and with them raise them while boosting their confidence. Overall personality…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are assisting them with their studies and provide comfort. I do not think tutors should spoon-feed answers to students as that will not help them fully understand and learn. Other than that, I believe the ability to comfort and reassure students is extremely important for tutors. I have met…

I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. I would consider some of the important things for a tutor to provide to a student are confidence and self belief. Giving a student the self confidence that they can do this will provide them with the tools to continue improving and getting better. I feel that from experience that most people who do not have confidence or belief struggle with a…

Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
