A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

According to me, energy and openness are two very important qualities when it comes to tutoring. Making classes interesting and for the students to actually be able to consolidate what they learnt is a great achievement for a tutor. Along with making class fun, I will ensure to boost their confidence in their subject. My strengths are that I am a…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to build a student’s confidence and independence in learning. This means not only helping them understand content but also teaching them how to problem-solve, manage challenges, and stay motivated. A tutor should create a positive, supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. For me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there and help the student when he/she has some difficulties with his/her studies. Trying to find the best way to explain the topic or lesson and make it understandable. Also, establishing contact with the student is extremely important to make him/her feels comfortable and…

Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. A tutor's role goes beyond teaching academic content. Creating a positive learning environment, adapting to diverse learning styles, and offering clear explanations are crucial. A tutor should be more than just a teacher to them, they should be their friend, their go-to person in case of doubts and someone who's always willing to listen while…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. The strength of a tutor lies in his knowledge and…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. Inside St Kilda WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Matthew worked on adding, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Amisha tackled trigonometry by combining bearings with SOHCAHTOA and also reviewed statistics.

For Year 12, Will focused on advanced essay writing for English by refining comparative analysis of Tracks and Into the Wild and developing language analysis skills through rewriting flagged sections based on teacher feedback.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4 maths, incomplete memorization of multiplication tables repeatedly disrupted progress with fractions and long division; "she still has trouble with her 7, 8 and 9 times tables," noted one tutor, leading to confusion when simplifying or comparing values.

For a Year 10 English student, unfinished homework and unclear communication—such as bringing work mostly finished instead of submitting it in advance—meant less targeted feedback during sessions.

At the senior level (Years 11–12), missed practice questions and only reviewing notes (rather than tackling exam-style problems) left conceptual gaps in Physics, making it harder to solve complex problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Kilda West noticed one Year 10 student who previously rushed through probability questions now pausing to identify outliers before calculating answers—she's actively double-checking her thinking, which is a big shift from earlier sessions.

In senior maths, Matthew has started explaining his reasoning out loud while tackling tricky proof problems; last week he worked through a complex induction question with much less prompting than before.

Meanwhile, Will (Year 12 English) recently began emailing his essay plans for feedback ahead of time instead of waiting for reminders, showing more self-management and initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Middle Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kilda Park Primary School.
