Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. Knowledge and grades are only a means to an end, a tutor should make sure the students understand that. I can relate and communicate with students. I understand where they are coming from and what they are trying to…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Without this ability to change as necessary you are putting your students at a significant disadvantage. Breaking down complex concepts into simple ideas. Creating a comfortable learning environment where…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to both guide and assist the student in achieving the best possible results they can get. Focusing on what the students are struggling with, preparing them for upcoming assessments and giving constructive feedback on their current work. Being a medical student, I value how education builds an individual. Having the right mentors and teachers during one's educational journey can either make or break them. One of the most important things I have realised over helping my friends in year 12 would be to walk through the question and not actually doing the question for the student. A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. The most important thing a tutor can do is not to flaunt their own brainpower like a flashy superhero cape. Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Sarah worked through solving linear equations and then practiced using indices in algebraic expressions.

Year 10 student Jack focused on understanding the unit circle for trigonometry, as well as reviewing his recent exam questions together for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily explored exponential graphs and tackled problems involving surds and powers, including expanding algebraic expressions step by step.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often struggled to translate worded problems into algebraic equations, needing repeated reminders to "write out every step of the equation." This led to confusion between addition and multiplication when working with formulas.

In a senior Maths Methods session, one student hesitated to start multi-part questions without prompts, which slowed progress on complex topics like trigonometric equations. As noted by a tutor: "He got tangled in his thoughts even though he knew the answer."

For a Year 4 learner, difficulties organizing materials meant lesson time was spent searching for past problems instead of consolidating new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One St Peters tutor noticed a Year 9 student who, after initially getting most of his homework fractions wrong, was able to solve them accurately in-session and even tackled a bonus question with barely any help—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent high school session, another student who used to skip over explaining his reasoning is now confidently talking through probability questions step by step, making fewer mistakes along the way.

Meanwhile, during a Year 4 lesson, a student eager to try multiplication exercises stopped relying on her times tables chart and got most answers correct on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like East Adelaide School.
