To understand the student first. And adapt to the method which he will be most comfortable in while you are tutoring him. The understanding between the teacher and the student is very important Iam very patient enough to explain to the student as well as I can teach them in such a way that they will be able to understand. Its also about showing…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Understanding the student's learning pace: Every student is unique and have their own pace of learning. As a tutor you need to adapt to that. I am…

Most important thing you can do for a student is not to teach a lesson, but give them a reason to learn the lesson. Make everything a piece of cake and fun. Teaching can be mostly boring and overwhelming especially when you are at the receiving end. I would know as i have always had trouble grasping concepts presented by the so called qualified…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be empathetic to the experience of a student, especially as a young person. Having been a recent graduate, I understand the pressures, stress and desires surrounding ones education and the want to improve and evolve as a learner. Therefore, being empathetic allows a tutor to…

I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

A tutor should focus on empowering the student, rather than simply teaching the content to them, so that when the tutor is not present, the student is still able to motivate themselves and have confidence in their ability without having someone to rely on. I have a positive, active mindset which reflects in my teaching approach, allowing me to…

As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

In addition to providing emotional support, I believe tutors should actively support students' dreams by helping them set clear and achievable goals. For example, the SMART technique allows students to track their progress, which promotes independence and self-directed learning.…

I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Important things: 1. To be well prepared for sessions; 2. To strive to develop a connection with the student. Such connection would enable the student to feel comfortable sharing his challenges; 3. Feel enthusiastic about the subject. Such enthusiasm can be contagious which would increase the student’s interest and make him more earnest in…

Inside StrathmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Oliver focused on mean, median, and mode as well as constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jessica worked through comparative text essays by exploring themes, linking similarities and differences between texts, and using specific examples with quotes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben reviewed momentum and energy concepts in Physics, discussing problem-solving strategies relevant to his current lessons.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was encouraged to spend time double-checking his working and answers in algebra, but layout issues meant "he confuses himself" when setting out solutions—this led to missed values that slowed progress.

In English (Year 11), the focus shifted to making writing more cohesive; integrating similarities into each paragraph instead of blocking ideas made the work feel less forced but required effortful reformatting.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with maintaining motivation after errors in fractions, sometimes getting visibly annoyed before regaining focus.

One lesson ended with misplaced decimals on division tasks, leaving confusion over final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Strathmore noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to spot an author's contention—now she pinpoints arguments and techniques without prompting.

Another high schooler, Leon, used to rely on step-by-step help for statistics but this week read data and built plots on his own before accurately calculating the mean and range.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated with fractions surprised her tutor by quickly adding unlike denominators independently, then showing her work aloud as she explained each step.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Strathmore Primary School.
