Simplify concepts in an understandable personalized way for them to understand at their own rythm. A tutor can relieve the preassure of due dates or schedules from the classroom and advance along with the student. Focusing on understanding how the student learns, ask them about their interests and being able to relate the subject with something…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

The single most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to provide them with a calm, safe space where the student can best apply their skills and knowledge whilst guiding them on the appropriate path. I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. As a tutor, I believe I can help my students overcome any challenge they face in their studies, by teaching concepts in a way that they…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I strongly believe that it's important for the tutor to motivate the student to be confident and answer irrespective of the answer being right or wrong. Students are…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

On of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make sure they understand the concept fully and understand how a formula was found instead of just using it to solve problems. I also believe it is important to make sure things are explained intuitively to students to help them understand the specifics of a topic better. Lastly, I…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. I believe a tutor should adapt to the student's learning style. Beyond that, I also consider building a strong bond with the student, creating a supportive and comfortable environment, setting clear goals, providing constructive feedback, and instilling a sense of confidence and self-efficacy to be equally important. I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

Inside Sydney Olympic ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student completed a Maths Olympiad worksheet and workbook activities focusing on addition and subtraction with two- to four-digit numbers, as well as starting multiplication with larger numbers.

Year 9 student Alyssa tackled direct variation in linear relationships and practiced rearranging formulas for simple interest calculations using real-life examples.

For Year 12, David worked through differentiation techniques including the product and quotient rules, and was introduced to inverse trigonometric functions such as arcsin(x) and arccos(x).

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often hesitated when writing out division steps, preferring to "do it in his mind," which led to misaligned digits and confusion about which number belonged above the line—"he needs to write every step," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student avoided writing full working for induction proofs and struggled with linking nk and nk+1, causing repeated errors in logical progression.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student's revision focused only on familiar trigonometric formulas, leaving gaps when tackling exam questions that required lesser-known identities or domains. This resulted in uncertainty during multi-step problems and slowed progress under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sydney Olympic Park noticed that one Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now regularly voices questions about tricky derivatives, especially when working with inverse trigonometric functions—a real shift from staying silent and guessing.

In another high school session, a student managed to identify the critical path in a complex network diagram after struggling to visualise connections just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often made errors with subtraction recently completed an entire quiz on addition and subtraction without a single mistake and even tackled some harder problems by choice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lidcombe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
