The most important thing a tutor can do is be a mentor. Students need a guide who can not only help them academically but also go a little extra and use their experience to teach them essential skills like time management. These little details play a major role in the tutee's overall success. My strengths as a tutor include deep understanding of…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create an environment where the student feels fully comfortable and confident. It’s crucial that they never hesitate to ask questions or admit when something isn’t clear. When students feel safe and supported, genuine learning can take place. After that, I think it’s about helping them…

I consider helping to improve students' confidence and problem solving skills to be the most important thing. I know as a tutors we are not always going to be there to help the student. By not only improving their understanding but giving them the confidence to have a go at a problem is how tutors can be the most impactful. My strengths are…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

A tutor should first be very welcoming and create a warm environment for students. In order to help students achieve their highest potential tutors should adapt and create new engaging ways of teaching the subject to make the student feel confident and have fun while learning it. From my perspective, I feel the least and most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure that the student is 100% clear with all the content that is being gone through during the lesson. That is, the student is able to complete similar type of questions with 100% confidence. In order to achieve that, the tutor needs to adjust the pace of…

I believe the job of the tutor is to make the student understand the importance why they study the subject and solve any or all problems the student faces. It is also the duty of the tutor to identity the barriers that prevent the student from scoring high marks and help them overcome those barriers. My strengths: I am passionate about what I…

It is imperative for a tutor to know the students' weakness in order to be able to plan, practice, and implement the necessary actions/studies needed for the quickest and most effective improvements. The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. Kat, Tarragindi

Inside TarragindiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ava practiced converting between decimals, percentages, and fractions, and solved chance questions using probability expressed as fractions.

Year 9 student Chloe worked through algebraic skills including expanding brackets and factorising quadratic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ben focused on the quadratic equation alongside techniques for solving linear equations and manipulating algebraic terms.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on polynomials needs improvement checking back over her work to ensure she doesn't make simple mistakes—overlooking this step led to avoidable errors persisting through solutions.

In Year 9 algebra, one student hesitated to trust their own working, repeatedly questioning themselves and slowing progress; as the tutor noted, he doubted himself constantly which doesn't allow him to reach his full potential.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's maths written work was sometimes unclear because numbers were placed in the wrong columns during multiplication—this made it harder for both student and tutor to spot where confusion began.

Recent Achievements

One Tarragindi tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from frequent mistakes in expanding algebraic brackets to completing every question correctly and without hesitation.

Another high schooler who previously struggled to structure persuasive writing now drafts PESTO paragraphs independently, remembering all parts without reminders.

In primary sessions, a younger student who once guessed during oral reading now pauses to sound out difficult words, showing more care and accuracy with each line.

The same student finished his latest story plan entirely on his own—something he'd never attempted before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Annerley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wellers Hill State School.
