The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is just be patient and be there for a student for when they need help with their work, as not everyone works at the same pace. My Strengths as a tutor is that I am someone that is very understanding. I am very patient and like to encourage others to achieve their best. I understand that not…

Certainly building self-confidence in a student! It is the key to furthering skills and this can be highly motivating for a student. As a student who recently completed VCE, I found having a tutor built my confidence by exposing me to what was coming in my VCE subjects and therefore making me comfortable with the key concepts and theory. This can…

Being patient and understanding. Being a student is not easy. Understanding that is the first step. Sometimes, its not that the student is not able to understand a concept or subject, it just needs to be presented in a different manner. I am very patient and can go to the grass root level of each topic, thus laying a solid foundation for each…

A tutor can enable students to fully grasp and comprehend the depth of what they learn and this is the most important thing, as it opens up the door for understanding any problem and applying knowledge. A tutor can also create a passion for learning, which I believe is an essential tool required for success in education. I believe I can help…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. Most importantly, building a rapport with the student is crucial so as to…

I feel that a necessary skill of a tutor is to be both a great listener and team player. Because in the end, for a student to succeed and thrive there has to be a positive and motivating relationship between the student and the teacher; so that they can only go up. Having had experience teaching aquatic skills to children and adults, I've found…

Confidence is a key element that tutors can either instil or take away from a student. All children are born with a capacity to learn and it is our job to help them realise their great potential. In saying that, tutors must always be kind, encouraging and supportive of a child so that they can be confident enough to venture into the unknown and…

I have two years'…

It's important is to not show the student everything and complete their work for them. Tutoring is about enabling the student to complete work and content by explaining concepts to them so they understand what the question is asking them and explain to the child what the question is asking and then assisting them where they need to succeed. I…

Inside ThomastownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava worked on understanding decimals and completed a diagnostic assessment to target key numeracy skills.

In Year 9, Daniel practiced solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, focusing on revision questions from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored the surface area and volume of spheres and cones through targeted practice for her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to keep up with assigned homework, often leaving set problems unfinished—this made it harder for her to feel prepared before upcoming assessments.

In a Year 10 lesson, one student's maths notes were messy and skipped key steps, so when sign errors appeared in algebra, they weren't easy to spot or correct ("she needs to work on signs").

For a younger student in Year 6, reluctance crept in during long-division practice; she grew frustrated and started taking shortcuts on drawings instead of setting out her working fully. That shortfall meant feedback couldn't be used as effectively the next time around.

Recent Achievements

One Thomastown tutor noticed a big shift in Priya's approach to her maths sessions—she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent, which is a real change from earlier lessons.

In Year 10, Bianca recently began preparing her own set of questions before class and worked through equations independently for the first time using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Sophie (Year 5) showed persistence with her times tables: last week she took her time to double-check each answer and managed all 20 correctly without rushing, a clear improvement from when speed led to careless mistakes.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I would love to offer some feedback on Derek. I discussed this response with Jaidan last night and he requested that I let you know that he thinks Derek is AWESOME. From my observations,Derek quickly created a great rapport with Jaidan which is important for effective communication. I have queried Jaidan after each session and feel that he is benefitting greatly from Derek's input. He is feeling more confident and very comfortable to source support from Derek. I could not ask for more at this stage so thank you and more importantly please thank Derek on my behalf.

For now, we won't be continuing but we haven't ruled it out for the future.  We were very happy with your service and Jade is a beautiful person!  She has helped Keegan with her confidence in Maths and helped improve her grade this year.  We postponed tutoring at the end of term 1 because Jade had covered as much as she could before introducing new work, which we didn't want to do until it came up in school.  Therefore, we had a break to see how Keegan went, and she's had no problems thus far. If any problems pop up this term, I plan to get in contact with you and Jade ASAP!

Aiden is really happy with Faraz. He felt a bit awkward the first week but the interactions were much better the second week. Aiden finds it very useful because he needs guided revision (it's not necessarily about learning the content). Definitely a good investment!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thomastown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thomastown Primary School.
