The most important thing that a tutor can do is to understand their students and modify their teaching according to their learning capacity. A tutor doesn't need to use fancy language - what matters is that they are able to educate their students - the basic concepts in the most simple way, so that they are able to connect it with their life and…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A lot of students already know more than they think they just need someone to believe in them, guide them, and show them how to approach problems step by step. One of my biggest strengths is patience. I never rush a student, rather I give them time to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a strong support system so that they can confidently ask for help and not feel discouraged when they don't understand a concept. During high school I had an amazing tutor who supported me every step of the way and I think that is the best thing you can do for a student. I think…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. A tutor needs a good rapport with students. You have to earn their trust and confidence so they will do the work you want them to do. The lessons need to have variety so the student does not become bored. As I am always prepared, and I have so much experience I am able to see progress in the students because I don't waste time in the lesson…

I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

The primary reason why a student may hire a tutor is to give them the in-depth understanding of "Why" the concept is the way it hence. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

Inside ThomastownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava worked on understanding decimals and completed a diagnostic assessment to target key numeracy skills.

In Year 9, Daniel practiced solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, focusing on revision questions from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored the surface area and volume of spheres and cones through targeted practice for her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to keep up with assigned homework, often leaving set problems unfinished—this made it harder for her to feel prepared before upcoming assessments.

In a Year 10 lesson, one student's maths notes were messy and skipped key steps, so when sign errors appeared in algebra, they weren't easy to spot or correct ("she needs to work on signs").

For a younger student in Year 6, reluctance crept in during long-division practice; she grew frustrated and started taking shortcuts on drawings instead of setting out her working fully. That shortfall meant feedback couldn't be used as effectively the next time around.

Recent Achievements

One Thomastown tutor noticed a big shift in Priya's approach to her maths sessions—she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent, which is a real change from earlier lessons.

In Year 10, Bianca recently began preparing her own set of questions before class and worked through equations independently for the first time using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Sophie (Year 5) showed persistence with her times tables: last week she took her time to double-check each answer and managed all 20 correctly without rushing, a clear improvement from when speed led to careless mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thomastown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thomastown Primary School.
