A tutor needs to be understanding, and respectful. They must realise that students don't all learn at the same pace and thus must be able to maintain the learning pace with their student. They must also be respectful that student's are trying their best and must not be too pushing and must remain patient with their student. I am knowledgable in…

To learn the nature of the student's mind and how their brain processes information, so that a lesson plan can be tailored to their specific needs. There are many ways an individual can learn, and the most valuable thing a tutor can do is explain the information in a way that connects with the student's own learning capabilities. A tutor must be…

To listen and make the learning experience enjoyable. The best way to learn is to do it in a way that does not stress you out, make it easy to understand. I think my strengths would be my kindness and approachability as well as a real drive to teach. My weakness I would say would probably be haveing a hard time giving negative…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assist them in developing the relevant skills that they need to be successful and proficient in a subject, to the point in which they have enough confidence within their own abilities to approach the curriculum without feeling that they require extra assistance. The role of…

A tutor needs to be able to successfully teach the student the material but also needs to provide the motivation and confidence a student needs to study and conquer any tests/exams. Students study around the clock, thus a tutor needs to be available when assistance is most required to provide the necessary support. Also recognise that many things…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. I also believe it is important for a tutor to understand both the strengths and…

To help encourage them to try there best. Everyone wants 100% but they may not necessarily get it. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

A tutor should be able to lift the confidence of a student; with the ability to detect their strengths, as well as listing potential weaknesses so that there is a level of realism when analysing one's raw ability in a subject. I have the ability to break concepts into small parts to increase the level of understanding for a student. Paired with my…

Because delivering the lesson and making sure the student understands is basically a essence of being a tutor, I wouldn't consider it the most important. Instead, it's helping my students identify the "WHY"s (the purpose of their learning, values applicable beyond the lesson) as well as the "HOW"s (the way they can achieve it, even if the learning…

A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in their abilities. Without confidence, a student may not be able to excel or perform tasks to the best of their abilities. Tutors act as an additional layer of support for students, and with their help, a good student can become a great one with the encouragement…

Inside ThomastownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava worked on understanding decimals and completed a diagnostic assessment to target key numeracy skills.

In Year 9, Daniel practiced solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, focusing on revision questions from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored the surface area and volume of spheres and cones through targeted practice for her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to keep up with assigned homework, often leaving set problems unfinished—this made it harder for her to feel prepared before upcoming assessments.

In a Year 10 lesson, one student's maths notes were messy and skipped key steps, so when sign errors appeared in algebra, they weren't easy to spot or correct ("she needs to work on signs").

For a younger student in Year 6, reluctance crept in during long-division practice; she grew frustrated and started taking shortcuts on drawings instead of setting out her working fully. That shortfall meant feedback couldn't be used as effectively the next time around.

Recent Achievements

One Thomastown tutor noticed a big shift in Priya's approach to her maths sessions—she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent, which is a real change from earlier lessons.

In Year 10, Bianca recently began preparing her own set of questions before class and worked through equations independently for the first time using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Sophie (Year 5) showed persistence with her times tables: last week she took her time to double-check each answer and managed all 20 correctly without rushing, a clear improvement from when speed led to careless mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thomastown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thomastown Primary School.
