Moreover, a successful tutor should have the ability to make learning authentic, relevant and overall a good experience for the student. I believe I am very patient in teaching my students. In essence, listening to…

To help encourage them to try there best. Everyone wants 100% but they may not necessarily get it. A tutor has to help a student reach their own version of 100%, to put in all their effort, enjoy their work, and be proud. My strength is I am a people person, I get along well with others and enjoy teaching others. My weakness is I don't have any…

I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

Building a strong personal relationship with the student also allows both the student and the tutor to communicate better, this is crucial as no fear of asking questions will reside within…

Beyond conveying information, the most critical role of a tutor is to build a student's confidence and ignite their curiosity. A tutor should always express appreciation and pride for improvements shown by the student- no matter how big or small the progress is. A tutor should also be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the student particularly in a respectful and encouraging way. I believe that a tutor's most important job is to build a student's confidence. Most particularly when a student is struggling, building confidence allows them to feel that they can try and fail, which is essential to learning. With more advanced students, confidence allows them to stretch themselves even further. I believe I have developed a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand their true needs. Sometimes students need more than just a teacher who is repeating themselves to help them understand things. Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better help…

As briefly mentioned in the question above, the most important things tutor can do for a student is to not make the experience another class that "drags on". Interacting with the student on a level where he/she can enjoy or be intrigued by the work is essential. To do this, you cannot let the theories from a textbook stay as theories.…

A tutor has an integral part of a student's schooling journey. Obviously, a tutor is going to assist students with their academic needs, but there are also other important duties that a tutor must fulfill. From my own experience, I can say that a great tutor seeks to understand the student's ambitions. This includes but is not limited to…

Inside ThomastownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava worked on understanding decimals and completed a diagnostic assessment to target key numeracy skills.

In Year 9, Daniel practiced solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, focusing on revision questions from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored the surface area and volume of spheres and cones through targeted practice for her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to keep up with assigned homework, often leaving set problems unfinished—this made it harder for her to feel prepared before upcoming assessments.

In a Year 10 lesson, one student's maths notes were messy and skipped key steps, so when sign errors appeared in algebra, they weren't easy to spot or correct ("she needs to work on signs").

For a younger student in Year 6, reluctance crept in during long-division practice; she grew frustrated and started taking shortcuts on drawings instead of setting out her working fully. That shortfall meant feedback couldn't be used as effectively the next time around.

Recent Achievements

One Thomastown tutor noticed a big shift in Priya's approach to her maths sessions—she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent, which is a real change from earlier lessons.

In Year 10, Bianca recently began preparing her own set of questions before class and worked through equations independently for the first time using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Sophie (Year 5) showed persistence with her times tables: last week she took her time to double-check each answer and managed all 20 correctly without rushing, a clear improvement from when speed led to careless mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thomastown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thomastown Primary School.
