According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . A tutor can make his student be a better person , and can inculcate the genuine love of learning and knowledge and showing others what it looks like to be passionate about his future. Sharing knowledge with the students is the main thing but…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Someone that he/she can look up to and be proud of. I have the ability to be extremely patient with my students which helps me gain their trust. Moreover, I can also induce self…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

To me, a tutor is the catalyst to a student's learning. Not only providing valuable insights into learning techniques and skillsets constructed from personal experience, but also giving students the necessary ingredients for building their own toolset with guidance and advice. The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. I believe this is the difference between being a tutor to becoming a mentor as well which will elevate the students' skills in many ways not only in…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. Therefore, I believe that tutoring is not just teaching concepts but also building an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from it. Inside ThornburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on solving worded problems by translating real-life scenarios into mathematical equations and practiced skills with quadratic equations, including factorising and sketching their graphs.

For Year 11, Lily worked through probability concepts such as sample spaces, conditional probability, and the addition and multiplication rules, using tables to clarify multi-stage experiments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Max tackled calculus topics by reviewing differentiation from first principles as well as applying derivative rules to interpret the meaning of slopes and turning points in functions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student reviewing organic chemistry sometimes skimmed over questions without fully checking charge states, as a tutor noted: "Needs to remember states and to check over charge of molecules."

In Methods calculus (Year 12), another student showed confidence but occasionally struggled to set out full working for integration constants, leading to uncertainty about final answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner tackling multi-digit subtraction would often forget to carry the one, making it tricky to spot where errors crept in.

During practice, the urge to finish quickly meant small details—like careful reading or stepwise calculations—were missed, resulting in avoidable confusion mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Thornbury tutoring session saw a Year 11 student tackle trigonometric relationships independently, where previously he'd often paused or waited for hints before attempting these questions.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck factoring polynomials was able to complete almost all quadratic equations without any help, showing real self-sufficiency during revision.

In the primary years, one student who would hesitate over times tables managed to recall and write out their 9s with only minor prompting—something that's been a challenge in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northcote Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
