Creating a good relationship with student: If a relationship of mutual understanding is created where the student and teacher can bounce ideas of each other and the student feels appreciated, the…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. I am able to understand the thought process of a student and their weak points. This allows me to help construct their concepts from the base up and ensure they can solve any…

It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Not only should the student feel relaxed while in class, they should start to gain interest in what they are learning. I think at least a tutor can do on the practical aspect is to help the student achieve their goals, lead them and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. Teaching them not to memorise formulae but to actually understand the theory behind the formula as higher levels of maths rely on prior knowledge that needs to be firmly understood. Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

Inside TurrellaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Grace practised converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, and also worked on calculating mean, mode, median, and range.

For Year 10, Thomas focused on factorising quadratic expressions (both monic and non-monic) using the PSF method and solved equations by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace analysed T.S. Eliot's poetry for Module B, refined essay structures for English Advanced, and practised unpacking essay questions to develop stronger thesis statements.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt harder algebra problems without textbook guidance—"needs more tries on more multiplication problems," a tutor noted—resulting in repeated practice of only familiar types.

For a senior student in Advanced English, feedback was often unaddressed between drafts; ideas discussed aloud were rarely incorporated into written essays, and her arguments leaned heavily on repeating class-taught terms rather than building with specific examples from texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to follow sentences line by line in reading tasks and skipped back-checking answers aloud, which made sequencing steps in worded math problems even more challenging during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Turrella tutor noticed one Year 11 student who used to struggle with linking feedback to her writing now revises full essay drafts independently, making targeted changes for clarity and detail.

In Year 9 maths, a student who was hesitant with mean, mode, and median recently solved data questions without prompting and tackled converting decimals to percentages confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words has started pausing to sound them out before reading on—showing more patience and self-correction than before. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe West Infants School.
