I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is remaining patient and continue to persevere with the content. In my experience, if I didn't understand a concept or was struggling with a question, it was extremely helpful when my tutor continued to talk me through the topic and didn't get frustrated at me for not…

In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

I firmly believe that a tutor should not only share knowledge but also inspire a love for learning. Building a strong mentor-student relationship is crucial, nurturing an environment where questions are encouraged, and challenges are viewed as opportunities for growth. Also, tailoring teaching methods to suit individual learning styles, and…

The most important things a tutor can offer is ongoing support, record of the student’s growth and achievements, providing help outside of what the student already is aware of, treating them as an individual who is already capable and just needs a little help in unlocking their abilities and lastly help students set and meet their long term and…

Apart from imparting knowledge, a good tutor should be able to make the student fall in love with the subject. This will guide the student to understand the topic better and most importantly relate it to practical scenarios. Further, a tutor plays a decisive role in unraveling the hidden potential of a student. Not everyone is meant to be a math…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is guide that student to success, this can be achieved by listening and being attentive to the childs learning styles and needs. Patience and understanding. I believe that patience is one of the most important qualities to have as a tutor, this is because it can be very frustrating as a…

Teaching the content and helping them fully grasp it, rather than doing it for them. I find that a lot of subjects have a particular rhythm to them; although some require rote learning (like particular concepts, especially within math), there are always patterns that can be identified so that students achieve their very best. For example: Stage 2…

Being able to consistently be present for my students is the most important thing to do as a tutor. Doing this allows the students to have support 24/7 even outside tutoring lessons in order to…

The most important thing a tutor must do is to assess the student's answer and provide feedback, as that really helps them learn from their mistakes. Equally integral is, taking a doubt session as solving the doubts of the student not only improves learning but also develops a sense of confidence in the student about the subject, which develops a…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

Sometimes a student needs more than just a tutor who can teach him or her difficult contents; they also need someone who can provide them with encouragement and support so they can start believing in their own skills. A tutor can come up with millions of strategies to apply in order to deliver a lesson, but it'll be worthless if you don't relate…

Emily commented to me that she thinks Lisa is very nice and is comfortable working with her, which is great. Emily also said that Lisa explains things in a different way that she can understand.

Inside Walkley HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Lilah worked on understanding fractions by using a workbook for basic problems and practiced reading analogue clocks to strengthen her grasp of time concepts.

In Year 7, Emily focused on simplifying algebraic expressions through worded questions and deepened her knowledge of exponents while revisiting order of operations (BEDMAS).

Meanwhile, Year 8 student brushed up on the basics of statistics, including mean, median, and mode, then applied these concepts to solve real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student often needed prompts to begin multi-step questions independently—"we need to work on Emily doing the questions by herself," a tutor observed after fraction exercises.

She sometimes skipped rereading worded problems, missing key information and struggling with conversions (e.g., meters to centimeters).

In upper primary, another student hesitated before answering even familiar material, repeatedly seeking reassurance before starting calculations or reading tasks; confidence dips meant she'd wait for confirmation instead of trusting her first instincts.

During revision, both occasionally focused only on easier examples, which slowed progress when tackling new or complex homework problems alone.

Recent Achievements

One Walkley Heights tutoring session saw a high school student, Emily, divide mixed numbers independently—a big step up from last week when she kept forgetting the steps.

In another case, after struggling with Roman numerals at first, Lilah (Year 5) remembered last week's lesson and confidently answered every question right this time.

Meanwhile, Duaa (early primary) used to just read words without following the story, but now she's retelling what happened in her books and predicting what might come next. Last lesson, she finished her book and explained each part in her own words.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ingle Farm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ingle Farm East Primary School.
