Equally important is boosting the student's confidence, showing them that they are capable of overcoming challenges. A great tutor adapts to the student's unique learning style and pace,…

Having that listening ear for your student is important as every child is different. As such, it is important to know and acknowledge that each student will have a different skill set and thus succeed in different approaches. That listening ear will be helpful and important as this will give the student opportunities to explain themselves more…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. I take pride in my ability to allow students to communicate any struggles that they may have before starting. In addition, being engaging while teaching ensures that…

My main priority as a tutor has always been to develop a love, or at least form of passion, from the student regarding whatever I teach. From first hand experience I know that it is almost impossible to truly devote effort and time into a subject you can't stand. Thus, I believe a tutor must help provide a path for more effective learning and…

I think first and foremost, the most important thing a tutor can do is improve a student's confidence in their academic abilities. improving a student's self confidence enables them to not only feel more comfortable participating in class but also makes them believe that they actually know the content and can understand the information. I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that a tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I believe…

Inside WaterwaysTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ethan practised writing numbers in expanded form and solved digit combination challenge questions that required using each digit only once.

For Year 10, Sarah worked on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and was introduced to the discriminant, applying these concepts directly to her schoolwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James focused on finding equations of lines given a gradient and a point, then continued assigned work on linear relations using his Easter homework sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently avoided writing out algebra steps, preferring to do calculations mentally—this made it hard to catch sign errors and led to confusion when checking answers ("he had the habit of trying to do all the steps in his head before answering").

In a Year 11 Physics session, equations from electromagnetism were only vaguely recalled unless prompted, as no organized summary or reference list was maintained.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student with creative story ideas found transferring thoughts onto paper challenging; great verbal detail vanished when faced with the blank page. Each instance meant time spent retracing rather than progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waterways tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requesting clarification on using the calculator's shift function for inverse trigonometry—he then completed angle problems independently.

In Year 8, a student who used to guess at comprehension answers began searching for "hints" within texts and solved worded maths questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4, once distracted during spelling activities, managed to write each target word three times as directed and sorted them into categories with much more focus than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
