It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. In my experience, a student needs a tutor willing to adapt to their needs. A tutor can always keep track of their student's progress and help them achieve their goals. We are helping students achieve their goals.…

The single most important thing a tutor can do is encourage students. Without encouragement and support a student cannot learn anything. As a tutor it is our job to boost our students self esteem and confidence in their own abilities in that subject. I always want my students to feel comfortable around me and never be afraid to speak up or to make…

For me, the most important things a tutor can do are build trust with the student, explain concepts clearly, and create a positive, supportive environment. When students feel comfortable and supported, they are more willing to ask questions and take on challenges Breaking down complex ideas into simple steps helps them understand and apply what…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

Listening to students and identifying the areas in which students need additional assistance is one of the most crucial roles of a tutor. Therefore, tutors must be responsive to students by carefully listening to their areas of concern, and taking these into account in order to organize lessons that are best suited for developing the necessary…

A tutor needs to care about their student. Without a sense of trust between teacher and student, there exists no confidence in either party. The student's faith in the system declines, as does the teacher's faith in the student. Thus, what I deem THE most important factor in tutoring is to show compassion and understanding to a student; to show…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have faith and empathy for the one they are teaching. This is because only through empathy can they identify what the student needs to improve on. Through faith, the student will have the courage to learn and strive for consistency and a harmonious relationship between teacher and…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

1. Empathetic: Understands what it’s like to be a student who may lack confidence, feel stressed, be overwhelmed or just not understand the material. 2. Honest: Don’t hesitate to say that you do not know about a particular concept. Trying to bluff your way through will only hurt the student and your reputation in the long run. 3.…

A tutor should be capable enough to teach their students in a way where the knowledge imparted isn't just taught for the exams or tests, but taught as a lesson which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Inside WaterwaysTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ethan practised writing numbers in expanded form and solved digit combination challenge questions that required using each digit only once.

For Year 10, Sarah worked on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and was introduced to the discriminant, applying these concepts directly to her schoolwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James focused on finding equations of lines given a gradient and a point, then continued assigned work on linear relations using his Easter homework sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently avoided writing out algebra steps, preferring to do calculations mentally—this made it hard to catch sign errors and led to confusion when checking answers ("he had the habit of trying to do all the steps in his head before answering").

In a Year 11 Physics session, equations from electromagnetism were only vaguely recalled unless prompted, as no organized summary or reference list was maintained.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student with creative story ideas found transferring thoughts onto paper challenging; great verbal detail vanished when faced with the blank page. Each instance meant time spent retracing rather than progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waterways tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requesting clarification on using the calculator's shift function for inverse trigonometry—he then completed angle problems independently.

In Year 8, a student who used to guess at comprehension answers began searching for "hints" within texts and solved worded maths questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4, once distracted during spelling activities, managed to write each target word three times as directed and sorted them into categories with much more focus than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
