Understand their way of learning, and adjusting to the student to accomodate them. I have had multiple experiences where my tutor would try to teach their method and force that method upon me. However, it is important to recognise the difference in the way different people learn, and not force upon a way of learning and hope that way of learning…

Inside Watsonia NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student focused on fraction addition and subtraction, using number lines to clarify concepts.

In Year 9, Alex worked through solving quadratic equations for x-intercepts and learned how to find the turning point of a parabola from its equation.

For Year 11, Sam tackled conditional probability as well as hypothesis testing, with recent lessons including discussion of real-world examples and practice interpreting statistical results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student repeatedly avoided showing full working—"kept trying to switch around numbers simultaneously"—which made it hard to spot sign errors and slowed progress with negatives.

For VCE Methods (Year 11), another student juggled multiple textbooks but "struggled to connect what he knows in a coherent manner," leading to confusion when tackling exam questions.

A Year 7 student hesitated to attempt problem-solving tasks, often saying "I don't know" rather than explaining her thinking. This reluctance led to missed opportunities for feedback and growing confidence gaps during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia North tutor noticed Paul, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step guidance with algebraic expressions to independently simplifying them and handling worded problems—a big shift from his earlier reliance on prompts.

Another win came when a Year 9 student, who used to avoid asking questions in class, began actively engaging during sessions and even asked for tougher trigonometry challenges after grasping the core concepts.

Meanwhile, Gracie in Year 5 showed new initiative by quickly working out percentages from fractions without hesitation—last month she'd pause at each question but now finishes her set with just minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia North Primary School.
