A tutor is someone who can help to support and strengthen students' self-efficacy one-on-one. This is extremely important as classroom teachers have to manage multiple students in a classroom and cannot provide the same undivided attention as a tutor can. Tutors instil confidence in their students, assist them in unpacking and understanding areas…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include is Ensuring that the student truly comprehends the material rather than memorising it. Next, helping students develop self-assurance in their abilities by celebrating their progress and reinforcing their strengths. Not only that, being able to adapt lessons to suit the student's needs,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, involve being extremely knowledgeable about the subject material and knowing the right way to teach it. A tutor may have achieved extremely good marks, but if he has not planned beforehand, and does not know how to convey his knowledge to the student, he may not be the best…

A good tutor can teach a student how to improve himself to become a better person, not only in academic life, but also in the real world. The aim for teaching is to deliver virtue and the attitude of learning to the children, and let them continue to learn and improve in the future. I will always support and encourage my student with my best…

Make studies fun in a way for the student to understand. Understanding the students strength and weak points is also essential and main point as it will lead to a more efficient method of teaching. I am very particular with time, also my problem solving skills and my way of communication to different age groups makes me stand out from…

I think the most important thing for tutor is to boost curiosity and build confidence for students within their acceptable limits. Tutors should always be responsible and supportive to students learning environments. My strength are patience, passion, and student-centered. I really love to deliver knowledge in a simple way that they could…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is not to put more pressure on the student but make the concepts that they struggle with more easier to understand by providing examples and easier or more logical ways to approach questions. Also tutors need to make the work more fun to do (for the younger students) by having…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do is create a positive and supportive learning environment that boosts a student's confidence, fostering independent, driven learning. This can be done by building a strong rapport with students, personalising teaching styles to fit individual needs, helping build effective study habits, positive…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help faciliate and devolop an independant learning process. By this I mean helping the student to learn, by not just giving them the answer but by helping them to reach the answer on their own. This way they will be able to do similar probelms in future, without assistance, and…

I feel that the most important thing a tutor can do is to treat students with respect and be patient with them. This ensures that the student is comfortable in their environment and is more receptive to the tutors advice. I am friendly and extremely patient with any problems that students may come across. I am also good at explaining concepts in a…

Inside WilliamstownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emily focused on adding and subtracting fractions and worked through worded questions involving long division to strengthen calculation skills.

Year 8 student Liam practiced expanding brackets in algebra and solved problems involving linear relations, including plotting points on Cartesian planes.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia tackled quadratic equations and explored index laws, using example problems to reinforce her understanding of powers and roots.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student relied heavily on calculators for matrix and network problems; as one tutor observed, "it would be worth revising how to calculate matrix problems by hand."

In Year 8, written work was often disorganized—answers weren't lined up when working with decimals, making it hard to track mistakes.

During a Year 5 session, a student repeatedly erased and rewrote answers rather than showing working steps, which made it tough to check reasoning or catch errors.

For a Year 9 learner, skipping notation and not simplifying fractions meant correct answers took longer to verify during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Williamstown tutor recently noticed Eddison, a high school student, becoming much more independent in his problem-solving—he now shows all his working out when expanding brackets and grouping like terms, which is a big change from when he'd rush to answers without explaining steps.

Chelsea, also in high school, has started using factor trees to break numbers into prime factors on her own and can clearly explain the difference between index and expanded form—a real leap from needing prompts last term.

In Year 5 maths, Genevieve finally clicked with the concept of area by reasoning through why side lengths are multiplied; she then solved several worded problems involving area without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Williamstown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Williamstown North Primary School.
