A tutor should push the student as much as they possibly can. Not answer the questions for them, continue making sure the student understands throughout a session and asking the student to teach a question to the tutor. A tutor can build the confidence of a student, reassuring the student on their strengths, and encouraging them to build and…

Having a good relationship with students can affect the way they learn and also their attitudes towards education, so creating a bond where we can trust each other would be very important to me. I have lots of patients with students. I understand that all students can be at different levels academically and even socially. Having a good…

I consider an improvement in confidence incredibly significant to a child's attitude to learning. If a student is confident in their abilities to learn a subject, then they will be more likely to put effort into correcting their mistakes. This confidence and ability to recognise improvement will directly and positively affect the student's self…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to: 1 - place a focus on topics the student is struggling with 2 - teach these topics in a way that is different from what they are being taught in class. From a basic principles foundation and adding complexity as the student understands the topic more. I am currently a 3rd-year…

Creating a pleasant environment for a student is, in my opinion, one of a tutor's most crucial roles. This is because it fosters a positive relationship, which makes the student feel comfortable disclosing when and what they are finding difficult. I have good communication skills with kids of all ages, and am patient, and am kind. To make sure…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make learning fun so they don't feel pressured into doing work but if it's fun they are going to enjoy it more. Even little things such as brain breaks are going to benefit the child so they can give their brain a break before diving back into it. I want to make sure that all…

A tutor has to be able to accomodate to each students need individually. It's important to understand the needs and habits of each student as each person learns uniquely. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them see the subject in the light that they do and nurture their interest in it. Failure in getting the concepts also leads to fear and that's where a tutor has to support the student , to prevent them from losing confidence in themselves. My biggest strength as a tutor is my…

A good tutor will get the student to understand the content, but an amazing tutor can inspire the student to want for more. Personally, I believe that one of the most important things a tutor can provide is that open dialogue. Students learn so much more when there is a genuine interest in the subject, and the only way to grow it is through…

Ethan is settling in very nicely with working with Jordan, who is very professional, friendly and approachable. Ethan is comfortable working with Jordan and is beginning to gain a little confidence in his approach to maths, so we are more than happy to continue working with him.
Toni, Woodvale

Inside WoodvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ava reviewed linear algebra and practiced working with integers, focusing on correct operations with negative numbers.

For Year 8, Mia worked through data analysis skills, interpreting different types of graphs and calculating mean, median, and mode using sample datasets.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ben tackled financial mathematics by exploring loans and interest rates in real-world scenarios, followed by practice questions on unit conversions between metric measurements.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled to keep written work neat and organized during algebra tasks; as one tutor observed, "setting out work so his thinking can be easily understood" was inconsistent, making it hard to spot calculation errors.

In Year 10, a student lost confidence towards the end of fraction questions—doubt crept in after small mistakes and slowed progress.

For a Year 6 assignment involving budgeting and timetabling, homework was left incomplete before sessions, so lesson time was spent catching up rather than extending skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student hesitated to attempt new problems independently until prompted.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Woodvale recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to rely heavily on drawing diagrams for division problems now solving them much faster just by using her fingers—she even gets the answers right more consistently.

In a high school session, one Year 10 student surprised himself after initially stumbling with circle measurement; he managed to demonstrate all his classwork independently by the end of the lesson, setting out each step clearly.

Another older student, preparing for OLNA practice, completed nearly every question without needing prompts and tackled some extension tasks as well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woodvale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Woodvale Primary School.
