So far I have found several factors that make for good tutors. Firstly building a strong and personal relationship with the student is very important as the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor can add essential ingredients for students to learn and grow. Secondly, communication and collaboration with the student,…

Aside from the obvious answer of improving a students mathematical ability, I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is inspire a love for the subject and the confidence not to be intimidated when encountering a new, difficult problem for the first time. I have a very patient and understanding personality, even outside of tutoring, and…

In my opinion, there are at least two things that a tutor can give some help for a student: 1.it is necessary for a tutor to teach students correctly, answer student's questions and response to student's enquires clearly and friendly. 2.It is important for a tutor to help students to figure out what is the most effective way of learning for…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

From my experience, the most important thing/skill as a tutor is to understand what students are not understanding. I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. Tutors should find those in students quickly and resolve it by teaching effectively. One of the biggest…

From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Inside WoolloongabbaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sadie worked on understanding fractions and reading bar graphs using visual examples, while Year 8 student Toby practiced solving linear algebraic equations and expanded brackets with step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zoe focused on applying finance formulas to practical scenarios as part of her exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, a student tackling algebra and fractions grew frustrated when complex patterns weren't solved quickly; as one tutor noted, "he needs to write out his homework in steps and take the time to back check answers," but often avoided this after mistakes.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 mathematics, another student demonstrated content knowledge but struggled to apply concepts independently—her application of financial and statistics questions faltered without extra practice at home.

In a senior graphing unit, difficulty visualizing function domains led to hesitation plotting graphs, which slowed progress on assignments and left key misconceptions unaddressed before deadlines.

Recent Achievements

A Woolloongabba tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 11 student, tackling linear equations and bracket expansions with much less hesitation—she now quickly spots which formula to use and where.

Another high school win: Kylan used to skip steps or feel overwhelmed by multi-step maths problems, but now he lays out his working neatly on fresh pages and checks each stage himself, which has helped him catch errors early.

Meanwhile, Carter in primary has started correcting his spelling mistakes without prompting and completed all of his times tables under ten seconds during a timed race.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stones Corner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian International Islamic College - Buranda Campus.
