I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter and to build the student's confidence in their own abilities. It's crucial to create a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore different solutions. Personalizing lessons to…

First and foremost helping the student to develop logic, as logic is everywhere, and making them understand each problem before solving it. The most important way would be to change the way of learning. Finally, the main part would be to increase their grades, so that they can enroll in world-reputed universities and colleges in the near future…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

I believe a tutor should have a better understanding of student's perspectives. To elaborate, every student has a different perspective, and some will go in a very different direction tutor should understand the student's perspective before judging or correcting students. The tutor should ask questions and should bring up real-life examples so…

I feel like encouraging them to have questions is really important. Without questions it\'s hard to know what they need help on, or what they need to improve on. So having the ability to make a good first impression, be kind and caring towards them, and able to make them feel like they can ask questions around a tutor and get help is extremely…

To answer any queries first - then go ahead with the class concepts. It is so important that the student learns the foundations of their chosen subject and that these foundation principles are practiced and solid. Without these foundation, students will struggle to understand further and more complex problems, so it's up to the tutor to make sure…

I feel that a necessary skill of a tutor is to be both a great listener and team player. Because in the end, for a student to succeed and thrive there has to be a positive and motivating relationship between the student and the teacher; so that they can only go up. Confidence is a key element that tutors can either instil or take away from a student. All children are born with a capacity to learn and it is our job to help them realise their great potential. In saying that, tutors must always be kind, encouraging and supportive of a child so that they can be confident enough to venture into the unknown and…

Not all students are modelled the same way. Some are able to learn by studying the books while others require a lot of practice. Hence I believe that teaching the student how to study based on his or her strengths is the best thing a tutor can do and I will strive to achieve that at all costs. I spend a lot of time communicating with the student…

the most important thing is for the tutor to teach how the student best learns. We are not in large class rooms, so we have the luxury, to teach in specific ways, that might only be good for that one student. Inside YarrambatTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on simplifying and adding surds, then applied multiplying surds to solve rectangle area problems.

Year 10 student Ben focused on linear equations, plotting points on the number plane, and finding rules for straight-line graphs using real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled exponential and logarithmic functions in Maths Methods, as well as practising derivatives and transformations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Physics, one student hesitated to attempt complex application questions unless prompted—"there was a lot of pushback when it came to learning a topic he appeared to struggle with during his test." This avoidance slowed progress, especially with transformations and visual problems.

In Year 8 Mathematics, another student relied heavily on calculators for multiplication and division; this meant that mental fluency lagged behind class expectations.

A Year 3 English learner showed agitation when asked to write full sentences, making written tasks feel overwhelming.

In each case, process challenges—not content gaps—limited independent practice and confidence in new situations.

Recent Achievements

One Yarrambat tutor noted that a Year 10 student who had struggled with surds now confidently simplifies them and even tackles rationalising denominators on her own.

In senior secondary, Sachin initially felt uncertain about complex calculus rules, but after targeted sessions, he independently solved chain, product, and quotient rule questions—showing real initiative by working through his question booklet without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student, previously hesitant to check his answers when mistakes happened, is now actively correcting himself during lessons and willingly attempts tougher algebra problems above his year level. Last session, he completed every question the tutor set for him.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Tutoring is going well and Nick and Charlie are a great match! Nick has already made a great connection with Charlie.

Minh aka Truc has been fabulous in the short amount of time I have worked with her. She really has given me the confidence I needed to have a better mindset going in to an exam. From the start she was approachable and understanding. I never felt like I was being judged, she was able to answer all my questions with an explanation on how she got the answer.

Joanna is going really well with her tutoring with Paul and she says he is really good!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarrambat Primary School.
