For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. I believe that creating a safe space where the child is comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they need is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, admitting if I don't know content (and then researching it for next time), time management skills, the ability to re-explain concepts in different…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

Personal relationships can form foundational to student success. Tutors can customize the lessons and activities according to students understanding. Good tutors should be able to help students improve and not dependent on them, they should be able to help a student solve problems and not simply giving them answers. In addition, tutors also have to be patient as not all students have the same learning abilities. Lastly, I think a tutor should put in the effort to understand both the materials…

This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

A tutor is responsible for providing guidance, by leading the way and showing the students that learning does not have to be intimidating and daunting, through their own experience. Moreover, a tutor has to be a motivator, one who serves as a role model and inspires curiosity, so the student is able to reach their full potential. I believe my…

Super easy to get going and my daughter loves working with her tutor.
Tanya Connor, Abbotsford

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as mastering times tables from 2 to 10 through targeted worksheets.

For Year 8, Emily worked through solving and simplifying algebraic equations, including factorisation, using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed quadratic functions by practising graphing techniques and applying the quadratic formula to solve a range of problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student often skipped crucial steps when multiplying inequalities by negatives, leading to persistent sign errors—"she needs to practice translating English sentences into equations," a tutor noted.

For a Year 9 student, rushing through algebraic fractions without careful layout caused repeated mistakes and slowed progress.

In Year 10 English, a student struggled with structuring essays logically; missing deadlines and incomplete homework compounded this issue.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, reliance on memorisation without practicing tables (7–9) meant slow recall during timed drills, leaving her frustrated as others finished ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to leave assignments unfinished but now self-assigns tasks before assessments and works through them independently.

In English, a Year 12 student has become much more confident at forming positions and backing them up with clear reasoning—she recently articulated how Rear Window both depicts and subverts 1950s gender roles, something she'd hesitated to discuss before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously made frequent mistakes in times tables just completed all the tricky ones—including the 13s and 14s—with barely any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Collingwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sophia Mundi Steiner School.
