For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

My relatively young age gives me this ability to connect with students differently than older tutors. I had the chance to experience it from my (young) Physics teacher at High-School. He really helped me understand the power that a biology tutor can have on your academic path. I think the most important part of being a tutor is the ability to…

I believe the most important thing a biology tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and…

I feel the most important thing that a biology tutor can do is to listen to the students as they explain what they don't understand and to help fully explain the solution of the problem to the student and to verify that the students understands the new concepts. I am patient with the students and I can work through many examples with the student…

A few key responsibilities of a biology tutor, according to me, are as follows: Boosting a student's confidence and academic performance. Providing a safe space to ask questions without inhibition. Helping develop adaptability and time-management skills. Encouraging independent and critical thinking. Improving a student's overall attitude…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method.…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a biology tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to…

Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. Therefore, I believe that tutoring is not just teaching concepts but also building an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from it. From experience, I believe that the most effective way is to…

In my opinion, the first thing a biology tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of…

Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

Very happy with the way it is going thanks Gene. Benedict is a good tutor and Saf and I are both happy with her progress.
Rankin, Fitzroy North

Inside Fitzroy NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on calculating percentage increases and decreases as well as reviewing measurement test questions to strengthen understanding.

In Year 9, Favour focused on solving simultaneous equations and applying linear graphs to word problems using real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Queen, also in Year 9, practised translating worded questions into linear equations and revising methods for finding gradients and graphing lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often avoided showing working in algebra, which led to missed sign errors and made it hard to trace mistakes—"he tried to solve in his head instead of using paper," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, one student left homework incomplete due to a busy week; as a result, they struggled to apply new concepts confidently in class.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner hesitated to ask for clarification when confused by fractions or ratios, leading to gaps that slowed progress in financial maths topics. The reluctance to vocalize reasoning during problem-solving also limited feedback opportunities.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy North tutor recently noticed Alannah begin assigning her own revision tasks before assessments and working independently—previously she'd needed more direction during sessions.

In another case, Moses in Year 7 has shifted from quietly struggling with statistics to now asking for clarification when stuck and finishing whole sets of descriptive statistics questions on his own by the end of the lesson.

For a younger student, Leon's reluctance toward long division faded after he saw he could do it easily; now he works through multi-digit multiplication and division confidently without hesitation.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks for your follow up. All seems to be going well so far . Anthony seems quite comfortable with Max and I think a little more confident . Of course it's still early days so we will assess his progress again soon.

Cassie is great! Ashley is already showing improvement in class and is happy with Cassie as she is easy to understand and can relate to her well. Thank you

Very happy with Luke at the moment. Billie seems keen and is interested in what Luke is showing her. That's a step forward for her when it comes to Maths.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fitzroy North Primary School.
