In my opinion successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. Also tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents and teachers. I am the type pf person who is willing to put as much as effort as possible to get the student satisfactory grades. I am also kind and doesn't get furstrated when…

As a previous student, one thing i realized that differentiated good tutors from mediocre ones is their ability to connect with me. As a shy person, I only felt comfortable asking questions to tutors that I was connected to. And so, I believe that the most important thing for tutors is to try to form a rapport relationship with their students, as…

The most important thing in teaching is to make the student believe that they will surpass any goals they set their minds into. Level communication in a way the students will be comfortable to interact with. It will be best if the students seek out help and teachers guide them into analyzing the problem themselves. This is when students start to…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence and give personalized support. By encouraging students to believe in themselves and adjusting lessons to fit their needs, a tutor can help them overcome challenges and make steady progress. My strengths as a tutor are patience, approachability, and the ability to…

A tutor not only helps the student get better grades in examination but also helps them understand the core concepts of the subjects that can be applied to everyday life and also encourages a balance between work and play. As a mental health first aider, I truly believe in the importance of maintaining a good balance and being a good listener to…

Most important thing you can do for a student is not to teach a lesson, but give them a reason to learn the lesson. Make everything a piece of cake and fun. Teaching can be mostly boring and overwhelming especially when you are at the receiving end. I would know as i have always had trouble grasping concepts presented by the so called qualified…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is to share your passion with student. The most effective learning occurs when the student is engaged, invested and passionate in the subject you are teaching. Forming a professional, friendly relationship with the student is key in achieving this. Although improvements in a certain topic of maths…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is believe in each student, and provide a constant support and show up each week. All these add in maintaining a healthy relationship and connection with the student. I believe providing a comfortable place for the student greatly increases the actual learning that is able to take place. It…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

I think besides helping a student with his/her academics, a tutor can act as a role model for him/her or someone he/she can look up to. A tutor can not only provide academic assistance but also can broadens a student's outlook in many ways by sharing with him/her many stories, news and also giving an idea about manners and ethics as well. The most…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. I strongly believe that tutor should never give up on any students and respect student's own learning style. Inside AberfeldieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah worked on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions, including an introduction to the "Magic X method" for quadratics.

For Year 8, Jack focused on trigonometric ratios—using diagrams to connect sine, cosine, and tangent with right-angled triangles—and revised graphing lines by finding gradients and axis intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily practised scientific notation alongside significant figures and applied exponent laws in problem-solving contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left algebraic fractions homework incomplete, meaning skills didn't progress between sessions.

In Year 10, one learner avoided writing out steps when rearranging equations, as the tutor noted: "She only used her calculator and couldn't replicate the method afterwards."

A Year 7 struggled with messy working—numbers and steps ran together on the page, which made checking for mistakes much harder.

Meanwhile, a senior student lost motivation after struggling with vocabulary in essay writing; frustration grew each time sentences were marked incorrect, leading to slower improvement in both confidence and output.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfeldie tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling with mistakes on matrix assignments, he recently completed his work without errors and started presenting his solutions clearly for exams.

In a Year 8 English session, Sam—who used to be hesitant sharing ideas—spoke up more than usual and received positive feedback from his teacher on his essay.

Meanwhile, Julia in Year 5 has begun taking her own notes during lessons rather than waiting for prompts, showing new independence she didn't have at the start of term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfeldie Primary School.
