I think the most important thing tutors can do for students is being able to adapt to different students needs. I believe I hold these skills. I understand that different students learn in different ways, and have experience in fostering environments which cater to all styles of learning. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are fostering a positive learning environment, tailoring explanations to the student's understanding, and providing encouragement. Building a supportive connection and instilling confidence can significantly enhance the learning experience. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my…

Teach them how to think independently, and provide them with a way of thinking efficiently. Math is not a discipline in which someone does enough problems and can solve all the problems, but a discipline that requires people to constantly think about questions. So if one only knows to let students do lots of problems then he might not be a good…

I believe that a tutor shouldn't be perceived as a strictly authoritative figure - keeping the student engaged and building a strong relationship is a vital component in the effectiveness of the tutoring. Students - myself included - gain much more knowledge when lessons are more flexible. It usually takes me a few sessions to understand a…

The ability to help students so that they are able to understand a particular topic and be able to do questions independently is what the most important thing a tutor can do, and that is my aim as a tutor. Another important aspect a tutor can do is to make is to make the subject the tutor teach as interesting and fun as possible, so that students…

A tutor can notice the student's strength and nourish it through a structured set of activities that the student can do in class as well as independently. A tutor can also notice the areas of student's weaknesses and supply the student with a learning program that can tackle these weaknesses gradually and methodically. Additionally, a tutor is a…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for students is help them find what they are learning is full of fun. Interest is the best teacher. When students like a subject, they are more willing to put in more time to practice and learn about it. As a tutor, there is only a very limited hours that I can accompany my student. Therefore,…

I consider the transference of inspiration to the student to be the most important and fulfilling thing a tutor can achieve. From inspiration births a work ethic, an attitude and an independence within the student that carries through their whole life. I believe that as an individual, you are your own CEO, CMO, CFO etc. As such, by teaching the…

Inside ActonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Zoe focused on converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages using diagrams for visual support, and practised adding and subtracting decimals.

In Year 8, Sam tackled simplifying fractions as well as identifying equivalent fractions through targeted exercises.

For Year 10, Emily completed a topic test covering algebraic equations—particularly those involving multiplication and division—and then reviewed how to solve linear equations step by step.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled with exam planning, as he needed to write a bit quicker in order to make sure he can complete the exam—and also properly pace himself during the exam and not spend too long on a confusing question.

In Year 8 English, skipping over assignment instructions meant one student missed key requirements and jumped ahead, leading to confusion about what was actually expected.

For a Year 6 maths learner, foundational times tables knowledge remained shaky; this slowed her down even on simple problems.

After missing class content, a senior student felt lost in algebra until revisiting basics restored some confidence.

Recent Achievements

One Acton tutor noticed a Year 10 student now regularly back-checks her maths, which has led to fewer careless mistakes—a big shift from earlier sessions when she'd rush through problems.

A high school English student recently began giving creative writing questions a proper go rather than hesitating; he's started catching repetitive sentence starters on his own after targeted feedback.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially quiet now tells the tutor exactly what's confusing during lessons and asks for help right away instead of guessing.

In one session, she tackled tricky decimal operations after just a brief explanation.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

In response to your earlier email, I am absolutely delighted with Nick.  Tabi trusts that Nick can help her and is beginning to deal with the sense of panic she builds up when confronted with problems she is not sure how to solve or techniques taught in class that she did not understand.  I can see Tabi beginning to feel more confident and she certainly feels supported by Nick.

Pat has really appreciated and enjoyed the help Josh has given him with his Maths. Tutoring with Josh during the holidays will make an excellent start to year 11!

Thank you for touching base. I am really impressed with William's efforts to date. He has very quickly worked out Layla's weaknesses and the areas that need attention. I also believe that his strategy of working slightly ahead of schedule and thus getting her 'in front' in some areas will help with her confidence in class. Layla is also receiving additional Maths support in school and combined with William's efforts, I am confident that we should see her Maths results improve.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarralumla Primary School.
