What a tutor should and need to do are guiding a child to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses with all of the power invested in ourselves; reminding and figuring out what their barriers are to success (such as are they afraid of they can't pass? or they are not receiving any support from their beloved ones?). In my power, I'd do…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is presenting concepts in a clear and efficient way that is easy to understand and to identify weaknesses and address them accordingly. I am easily to get along with and i am able to break concepts down to the basics and present it a manner that is clear as such able to build upon that…

I believe that a tutor should understand that students have different ways of the studying that actually help them in their studies, and they should be able to adapt and prepare new ways of teaching that is most valuable to students. A tutor should be motivating but disciplinary to students, to ensure they maintain a good mindset towards their…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in themselves. Once they feel supported and encouraged, they are much more open to learning. A tutor should also guide students toward becoming independent learners by showing them strategies for problem solving and critical thinking, so they feel prepared to face…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

I believe that the three most important things that a tutor can do for a student, perhaps the only important things which a teacher should do, are to make students curious about what they are learning and appreciate the beauty of what they are learning by developing a way of thinking of their own. I understand and appreciate the beauty and depth…

I think asking questions is key to understand how much content the student has grasped. Moreover, it is also important to be a good role model for the kids and gain their respect. I believe that a tutor must not add additional pressure to a student as I am well aware of the stress and anxiety VCE and other year level courses can bring. Therefore, it is vital that a tutor understands this and ensures that not only is the student exceeding academically but also advising them about strategies to consistently keep on working…

Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

Creating a safe space or environment for the student, where they feel comfortable to speak and ask questions without any judgement. Teaching study skills is also important. It is never easy with studying - and different students will have their own speed of absorbing the lesson they are trying to learn. Above all, I believe it is the moral support and social relationship as a mentor for the student. Inside AlbanvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ashan focused on calculating unknown angles using rules for straight lines and circles, then planned a TEEL paragraph and introduction for an essay on school uniforms.

Another Year 7 student reviewed complementary and supplementary angles as well as identifying corresponding, alternate, co-interior, and vertically opposite angles, while also practicing debate rebuttals and public speaking.

For Year 10, Steph worked through enzyme function in biology using test questions to prepare for her upcoming SAC, alongside revision of data analysis techniques such as linear regression and median smoothing.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was observed frequently solving maths problems in his head—especially with algebra and angles—leading to confusion when several steps were needed. As a tutor wrote, "he likes to do calculations in his head, but he's not ready for that yet." This habit meant errors weren't easily spotted or fixed.

In English, he generated strong ideas for persuasive writing but struggled to organize them logically, sometimes "jumping" between points without smooth transitions.

On a senior level, another student hesitated to let the tutor check their work during fractions tasks; this avoidance blocked helpful feedback and slowed improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Albanvale tutor recently noticed a real shift in a Year 7 student's approach to angle problems: after repeatedly mixing up how to label angles, he took on new strategies and now draws and explains them accurately without prompting.

In high school maths, another student who previously glossed over "silly mistakes" began pausing to spot errors himself—he not only corrected his own work but could clearly explain where he went wrong.

Meanwhile, during an English session with a younger learner, the student moved from simply stating opinions to independently structuring a full argument paragraph for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Deer Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albanvale Primary School.
