Priority is to solve their problems. HOWEVER, the most important thing is to intrigue them with knowledge. I know people can be intimidated by math, so did I; but all they need is someone to help them realize the magic math brings to life. Besides academic stuff, I am good with people. I'm totally the opposite of boring. I smile a lot. I've…

This enables students to feel comfortable and encouraged to ask questions and seek assitance on their concerns. Another crucial aspect of tutoring will be understanding each student’s individual needs. By recognizing each…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to provide a safe space for the student. They should feel comfortable in the environment they are being taught in as well as in the presence of the tutor. This will make for a conducive learning environment. The tutor should also be open to answering any questions the student might have. My patience is my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. Academic support is important, but equally vital is the emotional support that motivates a student to keep going even when they’re struggling. A good tutor doesn’t just provide answers — they teach students…

Finding the gaps, especially when they are gaps from prior in the scaffolding process that will only amplify over time. Learning is all about association. You cannot go to C without having to go through A and B. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to focus on the basics first and only if the basics are clear should the tutor proceed with the new concepts. Be able to establish rapport and trust. Being a good listen as a mentor is very important. A tutor student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. We need to appear as a instructor but a friendly advisor. The most important ability for anyone is how does an individual learn? This can be taught by a tutor and motivation provided by them. I…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
