I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

Confidence! Making children feel safe and confident is the most important thing a tutor can do for students. When a child feels safe with you and able to be their true self, they will engage more with learning and exceed all expectations. I am patient and kind and really care about the progress of all children. I also like working with the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to accomodate to their individual needs, ensuring they know that they’re smart and capable of accomplishing their goals, despite their struggles. My experience as a teaching assistant has taught me to be open minded and adaptable, recognising that there is no such thing as a…

To research and bring up more and more content on the topic on which the student is struggling to understand. With this approach, a student can see one topic in more different way and learn more and more. My strengths as a tutor are teaching in a way in which it is easier to grab knowledge from, teaching using a real-world example and in a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: Build Confidence – Creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is crucial. Encouragement helps them believe in their abilities, which is often half the battle. Clarify and Simplify Concepts – Tutors…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

A tutor can show the beauty of the subject and make the student love the subject. Once that happens, the student can excel not only in that subject, but can also approach everything in life with confidence and aptitude. I love teaching - That would be my greatest strength. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make students enjoy the subject if not they will not be able to grasp the concepts well enough. Ensuring communication is sound and fixing student doubts then and there so they don't persist is how one can nurture enjoyment in a student. Also making sure the class isn't frigid and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Hence, you must adjust your method of teaching for each individual student. Some people are auditory, visual or written learners, some like algebra, calculus, or trigonometry. Moreover, if you are understanding of your…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is buiding their confidence and enjoyment of a subject that they perhaps once struggled with. I believe that if a student comes into a tutoring session each day begrudgingly with absolute hatred of a subject they won’t absorb what is being taught as well because they’d rather be somewhere…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

I believe every student has the potential to become their best self. In addition to providing emotional support, I believe tutors should actively support students' dreams by helping them set clear and achievable goals. For example, the SMART technique allows students to track their progress, which promotes independence and self-directed learning.…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
