The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to inspire confidence and a love for learning. When a teacher believes in their students and helps them recognize their own potential, it transforms how they approach education and challenges. Beyond imparting knowledge, a teacher’s role is to create an environment where students feel…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. I also think compassion and understanding are necessary traits for tutors. Every student learns at different paces, and can grasp certain topics quicker than others. Patience…

Confidence and a sense of autonomy are critical components of a developing student and are the most important foundations a tutor can provide. Discipline and organisation are also important in seeing consistent growth in a student. However, building a strong and friendly relationship that is long-lasting is always necessary to see any progress in…

To help develop the conceptual understanding of the subject followed by in-depth expertise in the subject that not only raises their grades substantially but also helps them to cope with time-management skills, encourages discussion among themselves and improves self-confidence in them. A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

The most important thing as a tutor is to realise that you yourself is also learning, and you should not place yourself as a superior. As a tutor, yes you have the knowledge and your job is to teach that knowledge to your student - yet this is not an invitation to feel superior. As a tutor, you are there to guide them not dictate them. At the end…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. I believe a student can learn anything if they are engaged in the subject matter and they have…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

The most important thing is for a tutor to understand a student's preferences and what sort of teaching style would suit them. Different people have different learning suitabilities. Tutors have the important role of helping build a student's confidence and guide them to becoming more efficient learners. A tutor should also create a safe, non-judgemental learning space for students to grow academically. From experience helping peers and my younger brother with school, I found that a strength I have is simplifying concepts to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence and self-esteem. Often, people feel discouraged or left out when unable to keep up with their class. They become withdrawn and tend not to believe in their capabilities. By teaching a student challenging topics, I am simultaneously quelling all notions of…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is allow them to realise their own potential and skills, and instil them with the confidence to take on their assessments and exams without self doubt. Mina has been fantastic, raising my daughter's (yr 8) maths test marks by 20% in the first test after just 3 tutoring sessions....My daughter also feels so much more confident in class, and not so terrified to be asked to answer any questions as she was before.
Coral, Alexandria

Inside AlexandriaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel focused on probability using tree diagrams and completed practice questions on chance, while Year 8 student Mia reviewed angles and worked through problems involving rates and speed.

For Year 11, Lucas tackled a pre-assessment covering algebra basics, taxes and depreciation, as well as graphing techniques and trigonometry concepts like similar triangles and the law of cosines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, a student often felt overwhelmed by lengthy word problems, saying "I don't know what to do when there's so much info." This led to skipped steps and confusion about which numbers were needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC left several algebra questions blank on a practice test, not attempting them even though similar types are likely to appear in exams.

In senior maths (Year 12), another student missed easy marks in trigonometry because she didn't read questions thoroughly at first—only correcting errors after they were pointed out mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Alexandria tutor noted that a Year 10 student, who used to avoid asking questions when stuck, now openly identifies tricky algebra steps and requests clarification before moving on—showing real initiative compared to her earlier hesitancy.

In a recent high school session, another student completed the last set of opportunity test questions and managed to solve half independently for the first time, rather than relying entirely on prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously struggled with long division was able to finish all her practice questions without needing any help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
