The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence and self-esteem. Often, people feel discouraged or left out when unable to keep up with their class. They become withdrawn and tend not to believe in their capabilities. By teaching a student challenging topics, I am simultaneously quelling all notions of…

Tutors have the important role of helping build a student's confidence and guide them to becoming more efficient learners. A tutor should also create a safe, non-judgemental learning space for students to grow academically. From experience helping peers and my younger brother with school, I found that a strength I have is simplifying concepts to…

Patience, time and commitment. I believe in committing to students and likewise student committing to tutor. Changes in tutor can often lead to different expectations and hence confusion. A tutor should not miss lessons or be late for classes, likewise, students should not cancel classes without valid reasons or miss scheduled classes. failure…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Besides teaching concepts and helping students solve problems, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate students. As I believe, unlike school teachers, tutors can give students individualised attention. They have more time with their students to talk about what challenges they are facing about subjects or reflect on where…

The most important things I can do for a student is to be flexible, patient and to have a friendly, trustworthy image. The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Once they feel safe, the students can ask any question and tutor can help them and fill their knowledge gap. My strength would be perseverance, adaptability, and emphaty. I would try and give…

The most improtant thing that the tutor can do is to teach and educate the student to her/his best by giving the child all the support that the student needs to get ahead with his/her peers. To always be humble. The most vital contributions a tutor can make to a student's education hinge on fostering confidence and instilling effective self-reflection methods. Confidence is paramount; it empowers students to believe in their capability to learn and understand new concepts independently. This belief in their own abilities can transform their approach to…

Give the students the right studying tools (like time management or exam preparation for example). The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is tutoring them not only to make them get the answer, but helping them to understand about the material and helping them to have a good study habit. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. As a tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

Mina has been fantastic, raising my daughter's (yr 8) maths test marks by 20% in the first test after just 3 tutoring sessions....My daughter also feels so much more confident in class, and not so terrified to be asked to answer any questions as she was before.

Inside AlexandriaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel focused on probability using tree diagrams and completed practice questions on chance, while Year 8 student Mia reviewed angles and worked through problems involving rates and speed.

For Year 11, Lucas tackled a pre-assessment covering algebra basics, taxes and depreciation, as well as graphing techniques and trigonometry concepts like similar triangles and the law of cosines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, a student often felt overwhelmed by lengthy word problems, saying "I don't know what to do when there's so much info." This led to skipped steps and confusion about which numbers were needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC left several algebra questions blank on a practice test, not attempting them even though similar types are likely to appear in exams.

In senior maths (Year 12), another student missed easy marks in trigonometry because she didn't read questions thoroughly at first—only correcting errors after they were pointed out mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Alexandria tutor noted that a Year 10 student, who used to avoid asking questions when stuck, now openly identifies tricky algebra steps and requests clarification before moving on—showing real initiative compared to her earlier hesitancy.

In a recent high school session, another student completed the last set of opportunity test questions and managed to solve half independently for the first time, rather than relying entirely on prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously struggled with long division was able to finish all her practice questions without needing any help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
