To take the time to prepare a lesson suited for the student and take the time to get to know the student and identify his/her strengths in order to capitalize them, and identify his/her weaknesses so that we can work on them. Since I have been a teacher in these subjects, I know which topics most students struggle understanding; and because I am…

To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. Almost all students have more than enough talent to do their study, the most import thing in tutoring is to help them to uncover that (sometimes) hidden talent. In addition to my…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, especially in subjects relating to the sciences or math, is to properly build the foundations of the subject. To make sure that their basic understanding of a subject is there before advancing to more difficult parts of a course. I believe by establishing these foundations, it makes…

Putting down your ego, communicate and being there for them is definitely the top priority. They will obviously get discouraged at times when they don't get the answers. But I believe with patience, they are destined to get what they want. I think my passion and hunger to understand a problem stands out from other people the most. In every…

Regardless of a child's needs, it is important for tutors and teachers to approach each child with empathy, respect, and a willingness to adapt their teaching style to suit the child's individual learning needs. By doing so, they can help every child reach their full potential and succeed in their academic and personal pursuits. Every child is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and adapt to their learning style. Not everyone learns the same way, with the same words or at the same time. It is of utmost importance to showcase your belief in them and empower them to enjoy what they are studying and not just do it for the sake of school but do it for…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. A tutor can make the complicated things easier. Also, can make a proper timetable and show a way how to study strategically without getting bored or stressed I can easily amalgamate with my student as a friend and I think that's my most powerful side as a tutor. This is because they don't hesitate to tell me their problems and that's how I get to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them though their learning and to be a set of ears which a struggling student can go to and tell their problems without fear of judgement. I know from my personal experiences with hard academic parents that sometimes approaching those of imposed academic prowess can be…

Helping a student visualize the portions they learn would be the best thing a tutor can do for a student. If a student is able to visualize a portion, the student will be able to learn the concept and use it to apply in various applications. Making a student fall in love with what they learn is the most important thing, as I experienced the same…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they further the learning and understanding of their student. Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe it is equally important to really listen to students properly. As someone who has received tutoring before, when your tutor misinterprets you, it is difficult to get to the…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. I loved our Scott! He was perfect for our year 5!
Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
