Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. Leading students patiently through the learning process helps instil confidence. I've received multiple feedback from…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

By personalising their approach and fostering critical thinking, a tutor empowers students to tackle challenges independently. I believe that the most important things a tutor can do are firstly not only imparting knowledge on the topic content but also imparting it in a manner which inspires the student to learn and develop an interest in it. I believe that being able to help the student develop soft skills (such as communication skills & critical thinking) is crucial.…

This approach helps them tackle any type of problem they may face and develop a deeper appreciation for the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to start teaching them from the basics. I believe a good foundation is very important for any student to succeed in the long run. I believe there is no alternative to mathematics and the only way a student can do well is by practicing maths daily. My strength as a tutor is that I get along…

Firstly, I believe that a tutor should always encourage their students. Through encouragement, the students can feel a sense of self-achievement and personal growth. This would hence encourage students to try their best and feel more motivated in their studies. Moreover, I believe a tutor should know each student’s personal learning style and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them truly understand the content, and to help build the student's self confidence. I would characterise my strengths as the following: - Patient: I am a very patient teacher, and don't mind explaining the same concept multiple times in different ways—as it's important to be…

After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. I believe that the overarching role of a tutor is to have a lasting, positive impact on a student, and this is possible through various means. Firstly, they can support the student academically, by guiding them through difficult or foreign concepts step-by-step. Through this, a tutor can immensely improve a student's self-confidence and engagement…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
