The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. In school, teachers cannot take care of everyone and address everyone's learning need, but tutor can plan and design the lessons according to…

I reckon fully understanding the student and approaching in an empathetic manner to help the student. Being a tutor is more than just teaching students subjects, as a role-model for them. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is most definitely, helping them gain a confidence through teaching them and helping them understand the…

As a tutor, we are teaching our students how to think, not what to think because we want them to be independent learners. Our roles are to guide students in setting up their learning goals, motivate them to learn, and enable them to self-assess. As results, students can improve their academic performance, confidence, motivation, creativity, and…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. I believe that I am a tutor that creates a safe, encouraging environment where students feel…

I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

Be there for the student as their base. Confidence is key in a student's learning and just being a reliable and safe zone for the student gives them the first push needed to get going. I am very good at breaking each problem down to very simple steps that seem very achievable for the student and I am very good at building confidence in the student…

A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

The most important thing a tutor can do is ask good open-ended questions as it encourages independence in the student because it is important to learn how to learn to be successful in the future. I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to help them understand the concpet in their own way, I would make sure the student finds the path by themselves. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
