I consider the most important things a tutor can do is not just to help the student understand the subject and hand, but also to inspire and motivate the student so they become more passionate about learning and strive to put in their best effort. Learning is so much more than memorising the syllabus and I believe it is important to help student…

Patient explanation and taking responsibility will be the expected from a tutor. Understanding fundamental concepts is the most important things. Once the concepts are understood then the application will be the key. I can assure all of the above things along with availability at any time of the week. The student can call me anytime of the day…

Provide a love for learning. Schools are centered around competition and grades which do the exact opposite, but if you want students to enjoy learning and to continue enjoying it after they've graduated your class you want to teach them in a way that is engaging, relevant, and understandable. I believe the best way is to teach them the bare…

Clear concepts. Once your concepts are clear you can do any kind of question, sometimes even harder questions. Every concept especially in economics and maths have diagrams, I love working with diagrams and I think those are the best things tutors can do for a student. I think I give good real life examples and good diagrams to make concepts…

Be there for the student as their base. Confidence is key in a student's learning and just being a reliable and safe zone for the student gives them the first push needed to get going. I am very good at breaking each problem down to very simple steps that seem very achievable for the student and I am very good at building confidence in the student…

Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
