The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

As a result, they can recognise different modules and use appropriate methods. I am approachable and I can guide students to the answers instead of providing them answers directly. A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. They encourage…

I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
