A good mentor is one that enables students to solve problems on their own, and supports students in discovering their interests and appreciation for the subject beyond their tutoring session. I believe the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence in them. If a tutor can build up their student in a way where the tutor is no longer a necessity for the student, than I believe the tutor has done their job. Local Reviews

Haven't looked back, ezy maths has really propelled my child as far as her grades at school. Our maths Tutor has been fantastic. My child felt comfortable with him from the beginning and has been broadening and strengthening her knowledge ever since. With regular feedback from Tutor you feel you are always in the loop in relation to child's development.
Mary, Altona

Inside AltonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Madison focused on similar triangles and practiced trigonometry and Pythagoras' Theorem with exam-style questions, while also exploring compound interest as part of a class validation task.

In Year 10, Liam worked on consolidating his skills in applying Pythagoras to worded problems and using trigonometric ratios to find unknown side lengths in triangles.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student, Ella, covered bearings in trigonometry and revisited measurement concepts including volume and surface area calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, when solving worded trigonometry problems, tended to avoid writing out steps and key words, making it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred. This meant errors often went unnoticed until review time.

In Year 8 algebra, over-reliance on the calculator for identifying gradients in linear functions led to confusion about core concepts; as one tutor put it, "he could find the answer but struggled to explain how he got there."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student often forgot to bring completed homework, leaving gaps in practice that slowed progress with times tables and division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Altona noticed that a Year 9 student, after initially hesitating to ask for help, began actively seeking clarification on trigonometric ratios and then independently solved for unknown side lengths using SIN, COS, and TAN.

Another high school student who used to skip steps with linear graphs is now confidently plotting points and explaining the meaning of rise over run without prompting—she even developed her own summary sheet for an upcoming SAC.

In primary, one student who would guess times tables has started working them out aloud step by step, moving from 10×3 backwards and discovering new patterns on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Anastasia & Surya seem to be getting on & making progress. Surya seems quite patient, non judgmental & able to explain concepts to Anastasia in a clear & accessible way.

Olivia is doing GREAT! She gets on well with Alex and he is very good at making it fun and keeping it interesting. (she is easily distracted so this isn't easy!)

Matthew is “very happy with Kirsten”. That is the best feedback a child can give. Kirsten has a big challenge to get Matthew up to speed. Kirsten is setting him homework and has increased the time that she is spending with Matthew as he needs to put in extra study with exams pending. We can't ask for more than that from a tutor than to be flexible and mindful of Matthews schedule and timelines. Overall Matthews school results are improving across all learning areas.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
